I'm always fascinated at the distances the pro's hit their shots......... you know, a 212 yard approach and they hit a FIVE iron!!

I seems to apply to low handicappers vs mid / high too...so what are your distances? Be honest now!!

Mine are:

Driver - anything 150 - 250 yards (usually sliced! I might get rid of it)
3W - 205-215
3H - 175 - 185
4I - 165
5I - 155
6I - 145
7I - 135
8I - 125
9I - 115
PW - 95
GW - 75
SW - 50
LW - 35
Putter - Useless beyond 6 feet!

Playing off 15 (If only I had a short game!): -

Driver who knows between 260 - 300
3 wood 240
3 Iron rescue 215
4 iron 200 yards
5 190
6 180
7 170
8 160
9 150
PW 135
SW 110
GW 80
Lob 60

Im quite often confused about the Pro's yardages, as you sometimes hear the 210yd 5 iron, or 172 yd 8 iron, and then occasionally something more akin to most of us perhaps.
Maybe some Pro's de-loft significantly perhaps ?

Mine are: (assuming a sweet strike !)
Driver 250-280.
3W 230-240 ish
5W 220-230 ish
3i 195-210
4 180-195
5 170-180
6 160- 170
7 150-160
8 140-150
9 130-140
PW 115- 130

I would go roughly with ChrisMc, however there is no real average distance. It is so dependant on conditions, weather, season, course, wind, air pressure, me, etc.

Two weeks ago I was hitting a 5i 205 yards, now I am hitting it 160ish. It all depends how hard the ground is.

What is average?

If your home course is a swamp, or a links you will get totally different figures, and hance a comparison cannot be made.

On a perfect day with no wind I play:

1W - 250-300
3W - 205-235
DI - 175 - 200
4I - 195
5I - 185
6I - 175
7I - 165
8I - 155
9I - 145
PW - 125
52*- 100
56*- 80
60*- Around the green only and never a full shot.

As Murph said, it does depend on conditions. But I would say on avarage mine are something like this...as a base to work from.

Driver - 230 - 250
3W - 210 - 230
#3 rescue - 190 - 210
#4 rescue - 180 - 195
5I - 170
6I - 160
7I - 150
8I - 140
9I - 130
PW - 120
52* - 105
56* - 90
60* - 65

If I could nail those consistantly I'd be chuffed.

I have to laugh at all the people hitting 280/300+ yards, how consitently would you hit that in a round. Surely to get that average you would have to be hitting over 300 50% plus most of the time.

I would be classed a long hitter in my club,I can comfortable hit it 260,hit it well 280(seldom) 300 i would be creaming the knickers off it.

Creme de la creme would a daisy killer :-)

Driver: 240yds + (have hit it 320 wind assisted and topped it 30yds!)
3w: 220yds (Never much more than that unless there's a beast of wind behind it)
19.5º Fybrid: 210yds
21º Fybrid: 190-210

On a calm day, sometimes any of my irons go + 10yds. These are the distances i'd select the given club for though.

4i: 180ish
5i: 170ish
6i: 160ish
7i: 150ish
8i: 140ish
9i: 125ish
PW: 110ish
53º: 85ish
58º: 60ish

Putter: normally further than i mean to hit it!

Being a weakling compared to others but assuming a still day with firm but not parched fairways

Driver between 230-240
3 wood 220
5 wood 200
3 hybrid 185
4 170
5 160
6 150
7 140
8 130
9 120
PW 105
52 wedge 85
56 60
60 40

The trouble is there are so many variables - how many times have we been able to play in calm conditions with firm fairways?? About twice this year?
And how many flat holes do you play? and how many hazards that you deliberately play short of? These all affect your view of your "average". I know Homer has SC'd his distances in calm and windy conditions but to say you average 150 with a 7iron means you can hit it anywhere between 140 and 160 depending....

Today I hit a 200 yard 7iron approach to a par 5 green. Downhill, wind behind. The fact that I "average" 150ish with it didn't come into the selection process at all. I saw the shot and decided which club would get me there. Yes I have a starting point of knowing how far I hit a 7 but it didn't come into the process
Probably not put very well but I hope you catch the drift... :D

All my distances are based on carry using decent/half decent shots to get my average

Driver - 270
5 wood - 235
hybrid - 215
4 iron - 205
5 - 190
6 - 175
7 - 160
8 - 145
9 - 135
pw - 125
52 - 105
56 - 85

So therefore your driver would go 260-300, where's the laughing part? :D

All yardages are carry, anything else is delusional:

Dr: 250yds
3w: 230
Res: 215
3i: 205
4i: 195
5i: 185

Using the "once in a lifetime" downwind with roll yardages favoured by some: :D :D :D

I think the problem with any of these posts (we've had several before now) is that it's subjective, open to interpretation regarding distance (carry or carry and roll) and not uniformly measured. Add into that any variances for terrain and weather and it does become something that gives at best a guesstimation (short of measuring and recording every stroke).

Its a fun threadbut I don't think anyone needs to get too bogged down or hung up on the numbers posted and certainly shouldn't take any members postings to task merely because they consider them delusional or egotistically based.

Going by todays round, weather dry, ground ever so slightly damp from a few days rain.

Driver 265-340 (measured) Id say my honest to god average through out the year would be 285 or so as i hit a very high ball with my 9.5 deg mp600 and get very little roll on any course.
3+ wood 250-285
5 wood 220-230
3 iron 210-220
4 iron 195-220
5 iron 185-190
6 iron 175-185
7 iron 160-175
8 iron 150-165
9 iron 140-150
pw 120-135
50 deg 120-125
56 deg 100-100

I have tried repeatedly to use a 75% swing but its a little more inconsistant for me so I do tend to swing a little faster (never 100% effort unless off the tee on a wide open par 4 or 5) just before anyone gets onto my case.
