This is a sort of follow on from the thread talking about your golfing potential, also from other threads talking about practising.

This is how I currently see my game and from that I can see straight away what is needed to get my handicap down. This is how I am seeing my game at the minute, rating against what I would have experienced from playing with people off very low handicaps and expect the average player to be like off that handicap.

Driving - 3
Irons - 3
50 yards in - 10
Chipping - Cat 8
Putting - 18 (that is being generous to myself)

So I really do need to sort out the putter as it is killing me, also tightening up my chipping might save me a couple of shots a round. What can I get down to this year, I do not know. But sorting out myself around the greens should knock me a few shots off my handicap. If hitting the ball, was what this game was all about then I would be laughing.

How do you see your current playing abilities and what are you going to work on to knock some shots off your handicap.

Driver and fairway woods for me.

When they are on, they are smoking, but when they are off, jeepers they are stone cold!!

My mid-iron approach/play is much improved as that was my main focus last year.

There are no issues in my short game or putting aside from a rush of blood every now and again which results in me carrying it a little too far or knocking it 6ft by the hole.

My driving has improved in recent weeks, but I want to kick on and try and make it more reliable.

Here's hopng anyway.

Nearly all of my work over the last while has been from 75m and in as realistically I can get this close on par five's in two and also around the greens after just missing them.

I'm looking to improve my ball striking with my irons and my short game. I don't hit enough GIR and don't get up and down enough when I miss. I would rate myself as...

Driving = 6
Irons = 15
50 in = 10
Chipping = 15
Putting = 4

Early signs with my ball striking after a couple of lessons are good on the range but the course is yet to be seen. Short game\bunker lessons to come.

Have to turn good drives in to good birdie chances , so got to be pitching & say 9& 8 iron aproaches , as mentioned in another post just started lessons & giving up distance for accuracy & i do believe its working ..:mmm:

Hitting the damn ball in a fairly straight line! It's no good hitting it a long way when it's off the fairway or off the course all together. Intersting that Rorys average distance from the hole inside 75 yards is 18 feet from the hole, if I took an 18 foot circle around our holes then all I have to do is get it somewhere on the green to be close to this. I'm fairly good at hitting the greens from 75 yards in but getting to that 75 yards is killing my game.
Anyway I'm off to the range for a bucket of balls and some long irons.

Driving for me.

I think I hit the green a decent % of the time from the fairway, and get up and down a decent % of the time when I miss the green, but putting my ball in a position to go for the green is not a strong point of mine.

Using my last round as an example, I hit 2 fairways and 5 greens and was 3 over hc.

Driving for me too, mine is a nightmare due to an early extension although I looked at a video that JO put up and had some success with it yesterday(thanks JO) in a 15 hole comp managed 13 good tee shots.
So that was encouraging and to be honest I am happy with the rest of my game sure there are other things to improve upon but I would be happy to sort my driving out. I've booked three lessons with our pro so I am looking forward to the next three weeks.

LAG.....steeper attack angle, shaft lean at impact....

...and not swaying the hips to the left.....

sort this and I will be in heaven

Im convinced you have the capabilities to be a cat 1 player.
Listening to you say your putting is killing you.
I remember starting a thread last year about 3 ft putts[they were killing me].
So i got fitted[care of GM],and hey presto 2 shots off handicap.
Maybe a fitting would help you,or concentrate on your chipping,get them closer
hence shorter putts,less 3 putts,job done.

I am not too concerned about the chipping as I am more likely to get up and down from 20 yards than from 20 foot on the green. You saw the good the bad and the ugly at woodhall last year. There I was in high winds smashing the ball down the middle of the fairways and then hitting the green and 3 putting, even when I hit a good shot in close I did not make the birdie. That is what is killing me. The amount of greens I hit in regulation should see my average score 3/4 shots lower than it is. I am going to have a lesson and sort it out when the weather gets better, not much point having a putting lesson in this weather.

Two areas that need serious improvement for me are;

1. Driving - lose it right too often which is a killer on my course, too many trees! Distance not a massive issue, just accuracy.

2. Scrambling - because of number one above, often need to get out of trouble with improvised shots but never give it full concentration and often duff it only in to the rough, rather than finding the fairway again. Criminal and often ruins the hole for me.

hmmm, mine varies tbh, 1 week driver is great another its pants. Overall I would say

Driving - 14
Irons - 20
50 yards in - 15
Chipping - 15
Putting - 10

If I could improve my irons on approaches and driving consistency (and a little more length) I reckon I can get down to 15 this year.

Me too. I can drive well on one day, smoke my irons on another, drain putts from all over the place the next. The only parts of my game I know I am never really good at however I am playing is pitching and chipping so I am going to work on these more this year.

Distances for me. My ball striking and rough approach lines are good, but im either a club short (or usually) a club to long!

Consistency. I can go on a really decent run of holes, then throw in 2 or 3 real shockers. Sadly it can happen any time in the round, so I can't even blame it on a poor warm up or tiredness at the end of a round.
