Played a foursomes knockout match last night. Not going well, but had clawed our way back from four down to two down with three to play. My partner to drive, and I walk down the hole to wait for his tee shot. He is usually very straight off the tee, but just in case I stand well into the rough, and stand my carry bag on an old path thirty yards from the fairway, and well behind a normal drive.

His half topped tee shot then lands thirty yards short of where I am standing, and starts to roll slowly down the path. Like a rabbit in the headlights I watch as the ball gently gets closer to my bag. A geriatric hamster would have had time to react, but not me. Just as the ball seems to have stopped it takes one more roll and nestles perfectly against my bag.:o

Hmmm, looking at the rules app on my iPhone at the start of rule 19-2 it states "If a players ball is accidentlally deflected or stopped by himself, his partner or either of their caddies or eqipment, the player incurs a penalty of one stroke. Then when you go to the end of 19-2 it states Penalty for breach of rule Match Play - Loss of hole Stroke play - Two strokes

Now I'm confussed

Think the rule changed to 1 shot penalty in stroke play, but I thought it was loss of hole in matchplay. If it is not and it is one shot penalty then dash it (seeing as I am not allowed to swear):(

Just looked at the FAQs on the R&A site and the scenario described where the ball hits the bag is indeed a one stroke penalty in bith matchplay and strokeplay.

You'd only have chopped it into a bunker or the rough and left your partner in the mire

I was going to hit a huge slice with my driver off the path, bend it round a huge oak tree, carry the front bunker and check the ball up on the small ridge in the green, leaving a gimmie.;)

Try clawing back from 5 down to then hit a cracking drive off the par 5 18th tee and not be able to find the ball!

Doesnt stop there... Then going BACK to the tee, hitting a hooky shot right into the OB, not finding it, calling the match as he hit his second to position A. THEN walking down the fairway to the clubhouse to see ball #2 resting 1 foot outside the OB (in play), only possible with a MASSIVE bounce, a lot of luck and a distance of nearly 300 yards off the tee!

THAT is how to lose in spectacular fashion!
