I understand that. It just seems that the US has the whole customer service thing sewn up and we never seen to get it right. There are some fantastic fitting centres around the but nothing on this scale

The service is fantastic there. They are employed with the Taylormade name against them so would have to give good service. But that master fitter was amazing, he said he would have me sorted within 10 swings and he did. I would never have though of doing what he did. This is the strange thing he did:

We ended up getting the 12* head setting the head to 10.5 which opened the face 3*. Then pushed the weight towards fade, which together counter acted my natural draw and got me hitting a nice powerful fade. Even though the fitting said I was in an X-stiff I ended up with the Stiff shaft which got me a better ball flight and enabled me to release the club head more. My bad shot is to pull it, so instead of my bad shot starting left then drawing, it was starting left and fading back. You could see the final end result with my last swing and that just flew off the face.

I will eat humble pie and agree maybe I should have got the Mini with the Black Tie fitted, but I do love the Bi-Matrix shaft I have fitted now.

Everything is going well thanks Steve. Got married last Saturday in Vegas, stayed for a few days and now up in San Francisco.

who would not like to have a range with real greens on that you could hit at with real golf balls? What sort of price would you be prepared to pay? That place is $5 (£3ish) for 30 balls.

How much are people paying in the UK? That cost me $550 (£330ish) including the fitting session and with the Black Tie shaft upgrade.

Vegas is incredible, I never seen anything like that though.

The golfsmith stores in california are pretty impressive too, I didnt find them that much cheaper comparatively, however theres much more range at all price brackets.

Very impressive shop, not that impressed by the staff though. When getting my Mini Driver re shafted the club fitter in there argued with me about the tip size needed. I got my info from the Taylormade website he got his from fumbling around with a digital micrometer that he obviously did not ow how to use. Also I told him what I wanted to achieve from a shaft change and he recommended me a couple of high launching shafts, which obviously I did not need as I already had one fitted.

But the Roger Dunn golf stores are fantastic, all the kit, 4 flightscope bays that you can just use if they are empty, knowledgable PGA certified staff. Apart from the Taylormade experience, the best golf shop I have ever been in.

Where would you base it though ? It wouldn't be 3 quid for 30 balls in the UK and you would have competition in regards drubbings ranges , courses , AG and DG - for such a small country the footprint for golf establishments is massive.

Would it be just one manufacturer shop or multiple ones ?

There are places of a similar ilk already. Silvermere is the nearest to be that has had a real makeover, now a two tier range with top quality balls and a fitting centre that is state of the art. If you can build on that format (not sure they offer grass to hit off for testing) and build top notch short game area(s) then people will come. Pachesham at Leatherhead has a fantastic short game are with proper green (and that's just a nine hole pay and play) so not sure price is the overriding factor. Even here people use it in large numbers

Clubs struggle to do that on their own fairways and greens etc

Why pay to use a short game area for practise when most clubs have an area for free to do that ?

Even some driving ranges are going out of business as are some golf clubs - others are struggling to get members in.

There are already facilities in the country for both fitting and practise

Not that many around here if I'm totally honest and some aren't that great unless you go to the top end clubs (Berkshire, Sunningdale etc). Even my own club doesn't have the best, just a small putting green you can chip onto and a bunker. Also, not everyone is a member of a club and so why penalise them for wanting to improve their short game. Surely buying a bucket of balls is no different to buying one and smacking driver. From my own experience, the one at Pachesham means you can chip and then go onto the green and pick the balls up and use them again, so certainly for chipping is value for money.

They have one of those on near Glous/Bristol area - plastic greens and tees - back spin on every shot

It's like the military golf courses in Cyprus - plastic tee , take plastic fairway with you and then plastic greens

I'm just debating with you homer ?! Why does this have to happen everytime ?! My post today was in response to Madadey and you then responded to me

If there was a demand for it then why hasn't it been built by one of the manufacturers who release countless equipment to milk us of our hard earned funds - there are practise facilities around the country and ones with plastic facilities

To build a short game area based on grass greens and grass tees is easy in a country where the weather is very responsive and are happy to water on a daily basis and have thousands of people daily going through the place - it's the US - it's always bigger because the demand is there. If you believe the demand is here in this country ( as well as the weather and the right place and price ) then one or maybe more will be built

Or will places like top golf and driving ranges be a lot more popular in this country due to weather and finances

The problem is, everybody thinks the price for fitting is too high -- and those who go to fitting centres think they can try everything at their expense. I've lost count of the number of golfers who turn up at high end fitting centres, have no idea what they want, expect to try every conceivable option - and walk away empty handed because they are either tyre-kicking time wasters or too tight to pony up the money for a truly custom fitted club.
What the OP failed to make clear is the expense that a fitting at TM in Vegas actually costs - coupled with an expensive shaft upgrade (in a record 10 swings?) I doubt you would be getting much change from $800.
