What a shocking BBC sports personality of the year.

Pleased Cavendish won as he is amazing at what he does. For a cycling sprinter his achievements this year equate to when Woods held all four Majors if that helps put it in perspective for you.

As for SPOTY and the BBC, I didn't watch as was out doing something for work, but the rest of television left them behind years ago while they hang onto the dregs such as Snooker and Horse Racing, Gary Linekar and Sue Barker etc. Their loyalty is blind and I'm sure their are plenty youngsters with good ideas on formats and presenting though they need some money to show more events/sports. Golf coverage is decent when you consider they show the Masters (some of it) BMW PGA (I think) Scottish Open, The Open, Solheim Cup. That's a lot of golf compared to some other sports that get nowt.

I think it is time that the baton was passed on. The BBC has no rights to the highlights of the major sporting events anymore anyway. Sky, over to you to put together a decent sports review program for the end of the year and add your own sports person of the year award I think.

Elsie, who works in our chippy, her brother shares a flat above the indian with the boyfriend of the floor manager who used to work on SPOTY until he was sacked after being caught in the sound room with Graham Norton, and he said SPOTY is a fix.

All you good folk who voted....didnt count its all a fiddle.

And that's official from the sacked floor manager who went out with the guy who shares a flat with Elsie's brother

:D

I agree with the general consensus that the format is looking a bit tired, But I have a rather more fundameltal point to make.

Its not called "Sports Review Of The Year" although it seems to have fallen into that mode

Its called "Sports PERSONALITY Of The Year"

Now Im a Luke Donald fan, He is a fantastic sportsman and had a wonderful 2011, But you cant rate him as a sports personality as he doesnt have one. Yes he is a lovely guy, very nice and charming, but very quiet, private and not with a high public profile.

Compare that image to DC and there is no comparrison, DC is a bigger personality, Equally lovely guy, got a reputation for hard celebrating( nothing wrong with that) and has been very open about his personal family issues.

DC is the sort of guy your Mum wants to win.

So to Cavendish, it is fair to say that his profile is higher in Europe than it is here, First time I have seen him interviewed, and he came accross as another nice guy, but lacking that "Big" personality that DC has.

I thought both Strauss & Cooke came over well, but for me the surprise on the night was Mo Farrah
What a top bloke, great big personality, but hasnt had the media coverage of others. maybe in the future.

I would have put DC first, Mo Farrah second and Alastair Cook Third, Rory Next, But Luke would have been near the bottom

Obviously, Zara Phillips won it FFS!

I have to say the cricketers were always going to win the team prize. had it been a straight fight between them and a winning RC side then it may have been closer but without a hint of sexism how much does the viewing public care about womens golf? To be honest with three golfers in the mix the vote was always going to be diluted and so it probably made the Cavendish margin look better than it would if it had been him v Clarke for example (or substitute the other two guys in as you wish).

I think in all honesty the fact that they had to pick three golfers and a couple of cricketers really shows how poor our sport is in terms of real frontline heroes and quite telling that no footballers were there.

Unreal, Luke Donald's achievements will not be matched for a very long time.
Come on who's kidding who here, I'm not a Tiger Woods fan but he was the leading money winner on both Tours on 6 occasions 99, 00, 02, 05,06 & 07. He did it by not playing enough tournaments to qualify for his European Tour membership. So who's was the better achievement? Tiger with majors and fewer tournaments and 6 times or Luke no majors, more tournaments and only once.

Now explain to me how good was Luke's achievement?

Just watched this on Iplayer, I dont see what everybody is moaning about. I love golf and as much as I would have liked to have seen one of the golfers win it the winner thoroughly deserved it.

All 10 nominations have done something incredible but there can only be one winner and why not a cyclist? Just because its not your cup of tea doesnt make it any less of an achievement. Well done Cavendish, great speech at the end too.

My 4 year old has been riding a bike 2 years, easy!!

Cavendish was the correct choice as winner.World class cyclists live a monastic lifestyle in order to compete at the highest level, golfers are pampered rich kids in comparison.

Tiger actually would have achieved what Luke achieved this year 7 times (you missed out 2001...) but I don't think that fact takes away from how incredible Lukes achievement is, I think all it does is put into perspective how ridiculous Tiger Woods's achievements are.

What Luke did this year was amazing, but obviously when compared to the records of best golfer of all time( whos achievements are on a different planet to everyone else), it doesn't look that special.

I am glad Luke is getting the praise he is for his achievement, but it is stats like these that confirm my view that Tiger Woods is the most under-rated golfer of all time.
