Westwood's views on his putting ?

Which of the players above finished above Westy? Feck the short game... golf is ALL OF THE SHOTS put together.. you can't just be good at putting or chipping or even driving.. you need it all and you need to do it for 4 days... the right days.... to win a major.

Completely agree with this, from a personal point of view my short game for ages (100yrds and in) has been superb (including putting). However lately the short game has gone and the long game has kicked in! Stupid game.

I think we all predicted this with Lee at the outset, but 21more putts than Phil and 6or8 more putts than Bubba is a bit much. Still think he will win a Major this year though!

I think that people are forgetting that Lefty couldn't buy a GIR for a lot of last week and had a number of up and downs while Westy was two putting. As with all stats you can't look at them in isolation.

Sky looked at it and analysed it in slo-mo, it was quite interesting as his practice swings were fluid and online, the actual stroke on shorter putts was shorter and had a stutter then a push through as he knew he hadnt completed the backswing-
so basically its in his head, as it is with all of us in putting, its fixable though

He's a bad age for making putting changes, the older you get the more misses you remember and you can't charge putts like you did because of fear .

Tom Watson won a bunch of majors before his putting stroke went, he never got it back. Westwood is going down the same road but didn't win the majors first!

The 'Westy putting' threads are on the verge of being very boring and repetitive.... I made him about 3 shots off winning The Masters outright... that's 0.75 putts per round..... or 1 albatross......

He missed 5 or 6 (that I can remember) "gimmes" over the course of the week. On another week, he'd make 3 of those and win it out right. Plus, the greens at Augusta magnifies bad putting to the max.

As I said, his lag putting was superb, it was inside 10...even 6ft that let him down this week. A couple of hours with a v-easy would see him right .

Instead of looking at the "his short game is terrible which is why he didn't win", I choose to look at it the other way round...he was *that* close to winning despite his short game woes - he was right there even though he couldn't buy a putt.

He will win a major this year I reckon.

I dont disagree with the above James which is why i said that Westwoods short game isn't as strong as the players i mentioned.....With the exception of Donald not winning a Major all the other 3 players have won plenty between them.......
If.....Westwood had putted better sunday he would have won in my opinion. But he didnt.
So it really is about the short game and all of the shots also..... But his short game in my opinion is what cost him his first Major.

No because if Lee had sunk 3 more putts, then so would Bubba and Oosterwhatsit.

14 different major winners in the last 14 majors. It's a lot of chances.
i think he CAN make the changes he needs - as i said earlier, he HAS done it before when others havent

Personally, i'd go for a few more smiles - it relaxes the muscles; it's the same with all precision sports, you have to take tension out of your muscles, and being tense doesnt do a putting stroke any good. He does look very tense all the time on the greens

Lee's problem was spending his youth putting on poor quality, slow, flat greens in England. He seems to mis-read alot of putts and just doesn't have the feel the top putters have. I reckon he could spend 10 hours a day for the next 10 years putting non-stop and still not be any better. His only hope is having a freak hot patch on a major week.

I think some are reading too much into what Lee said during his interview. He was nothing but honest and said it as it was.

Also, lots of others missed as many putts, if not more. His short game? From what I've seen it has improved, even one of the commentators said so on the Friday. Much has been said about how wonderful Mickelsons short game is, and I agree, but he also misses a fair few putts, and often short ones too.

I thought at one time that Matt Kuchar was going to come through and win - but he missed too many putts, including some ever so short ones.

Oh, and he (Lee) must be doing something right, it wasn't long ago that he was number 1 in the world. I reckon he will win a Major, all he needs to do is what other winners do - putt well!!

It is not his putting that is the major issue for him it's his chipping/short game from 60 yards in.

The fact he's rumoured to be taking lessons now from John Findlay tells the story....:mmm:
