Westwood - not again?

He's the best player in England and number three in the world - something to be very proud of in my book.

His win at the weekend was excellent. Garrigus (sp) threw it away but Lee had to be in second place to get into the play off. When people look back in years to come, it'll just say 'winner - L Westwood'. It won't say 'winner - L Westwood but he was well lucky because some other player threw it away'.

Get off the guy's back. Nothing about his game is average. If it was he'd be playing with us at the next forum meet, wearing trousers that'd make Viscount 17 proud, buying a V-Easy from Bob and, seeing as he's getting on a bit, asking Smiffy for advice on PING clubs.

His short game IS average...why is it he went to see guru Roe? Because he knows he has issues with that department,I mean how many times do you see him out with the putter when in reality it aint ever a shot for the flat stick?

If he has a great week tee to green he CAN win this week,if he doesn't and especially with that high collored rough that will no doubt be surrounding the greens this week, he will NOT win.

Average does not mean rubbish, it means that he is in the middle of the pack on certain measures for the comparison group. 50% of golfers are below average and 50% above average. It is a rule of mathematics, quite a basic one.

On that measure, Lee Westwood is average at scrambling and GIR. Phil Mick is well below average on driving accuracy.

But is that an average of the whole golfing world or just touring pros? I suspect it's the touring pros so his short game isn't average in comparison to the whole golfing world, it's only average compared to his peers.

His short game is better than mine but not as good as Phil M. In that simple example he has an average short game but when looked at with a wider perspective (the whole golfing world) then I reckon his short game would be in the top 10%?

In the discussion about whether he will win next week or not, averageness should be compared to Tour pros. Neither you nor I will be at Pebble Beach matching our games against him, so a comparison with DNUK members would not be very informative.

But there is a broader point. Even the best player is not the best at everything. Tiger Woods is a wild driver but gets it round. Luke Donald is very steady but not very long etc. Each one is a mix of different strengths and weaknesses, and in relative terms, both relative to other parts of his game, and to other Tour pros, Lee's scrambling and short game is not great. But he better than most at other things. And in any given week, he could have a wild driving but a great short game week.

I am a huge Westwood fan not only because of his on course performances but because of the gentleman he is and has supported a number of charity events I've done over the years. I want him to win a major so badly but I think the evidence is clear especially in the last few years that when it really hots up he can spray the driver (as Mickleson use to under the same pressure) and he doesn't have faith in his short game.

I think No 3 in the world is a testament to his consistancy and the fact that he will always be there or there about in the big events. The last two rounds in Dubai prove that it is in there and so I wonder how much is now coming down to a mental belief. Either way he must have a decent chance this week and I'll be rooting for him

This thread started as a Westwood bashing fest, but looking at it from the other side of the coin, he must have something going for him.

He's not his normal relaxed self when it comes to squeeky bum time over the last nine holes, and starts spraying it around and messing up his short game.

But he still cards a 68, and wins the playoff with a birdie.

Does that make him a bottler, or hard as nails?

He's obviously got mental strength, but has been missing that extra little something to get him over the line in the majors.

Hopefully, his 1st win in the states in 12 years will just help him relax over the final 9 holes to allow his natural game to win it for him, rather than having to put pressure on the weaker parts of his game.
