New owners Reignwood want to cut membership from 4,000
to 800. By charging a one off payment of £ 100,000
With the annual fees doubling from £ 8,000 to £ 16,000 .

Been covered already but the new bit is that the members are finally putting the lawyers onto it. Wonder if that will stall the process enough for them to get an extra year?

Can't see it doing much more than that, and stalling the inevitable. Very sad but it won't be the last of these big name takeovers and changes into millionaire playgrounds

This is my worry too, there are a lot of millionaires in the world who maybe don't want to buy a Premier League football club but a top 100 golf course? "Hmmm, that's a much cheaper and more attractive proposition, I can run it along the lines of an exclusive American club, make some money and gain some credibility among my like-minded millionaire friends".

Its already a millionaires playground, you wont see many "normal" golfers there unless they get lucky on a corporate day.
But 4000 members is a lot, although how many only play once a year is unknown.

I do think the PGA need to look at the situation and decide about the future of the BMW,

Have never played there but know many that have. The general consensus is that it's not bad, but strip out the history factor and it's (West Course) a golf course.

I agree, let the millionaires have it, remove tour events and then when it becomes anonymous 20 years or so hence, enjoy them having to readmit the scum just to keep it afloat.

Wentworth is about 4 or 5 miles down the road to Queenwood. Presumably that is the model the new owners would aspire to, with the extra bonus of letting the peasants have a peek in for one week on May only. Then there is the new Cherkley Court in Leatherhead. This will be a resort but high end with the prices to match. There must be a limit to the number of 6 figure membership courses in the area.

I've played the West and the Edinburgh course. The courses are really nice but I honestly do not get why someone would want to be a member at Wentworth and not one of the other (much better) Surrey sand-belt courses.

Let them have it, but you then should not have any PGA sanctioned or run events there.

Like Augusta shouldn't have a Major as it doesn't allow 'normal' members?

Not buying that. It is still a great venue for hosting, as it has the infrastructure required, and the space for spectators to watch

Cos its one of the most famous club's in the sport perhaps?

These high rollers aren't signing up cos the course is the best in the area. They are signing up for the image and the status. Golf is of secondary nature.

Fair point.....I guess golf is secondary, they are more 'country club' members.
