Rant alert.

So I went to AG today for a custom fitting for the RAZR Fit driver. I'd checked that they had a left handed head in stock and a range of shafts.

"Not a problem sir. We've got the 10.5* and 11.5* in the shop". Oopps. Warning bells ringing. "I thought that the 11.5* wasn't available in L/H", I said. He came back a few moments later apologising that I was right and the one that he had seen was R/H and in the bag the "wrong way round". Not a good start.

I turned up in plenty of time and was given a basket of balls in the L/Handers bay to warm up while he taped up the driver. After a few shots with the RAZR fitted with the Aldila NV 60 shaft, he said that we had got the right shaft i.e. regular, not light or stiff. My swing speed was apparently the right speed for regular. Wow, I thought. He's got a good eye.

OK, the club felt quite nice and I may be hitting it marginally longer and straighter but it was difficult to tell as the range was uphill and a bit overgrown.

Can I try other shafts please, I asked. He reappeared a couple of minutes later apologising that there were none. "Well at least can I try it on the launch monitor to check my swing speed, ball flight, spin rate etc against my current driver" I suggested. "Sorry Sir. The monitor is only set up for right handers. If you really want a proper custom fit, you will have to go direct to Callaway at Chessington. Would you like me to make an appointment for you?"

Now. In the regular flex, for this club head, Callaway have 7 different standard shaft options, 2 premium shafts and 1 super premium shaft. The one in the demo club was an Aldila NV60. When I got home, I checked on the Callaway site and this shaft was not included in the options.

My initial concerns re AG posted a couple of days ago appear to have been well founded.

Pants is not a happy bunny today.

I've just had a look at Callaway's site, and it appears that the Alida NV60 is the stock shaft.
They list 12 shafts in total, under the custom fit option.
Where did you look for that info, mate?

That said, it sucks they had no more shafts to try, and that the launch monitor is only right-handers, although I guess as a %, there's far more righties than lefties.

Book yourself in at Chessington - you know you want to! ;)

What can I say - AG strike again. Surely they could have offered at least one more option. The trouble with booking a Cally session is that you get charged and if this is more of a fishing mission to see if the Razr is the right one then it could be wasted money if it proves not to be

What about the Internet golf store at kings wood a217, also known as lefty centre and listed as a cally custom fit centre. I know they have a custom fitting unit behind the no garage on the a217, could be worth a call

2nd this. Ive been fitted there for my irons and hybrid and they have an excellent range of options and really good service. It is a simulator fitting though, not a range. They are also linked to Kingswood golf club which has (I believe) the biggest lefty selection in the uk.

they do get some decent bargains in the second hand section though, from those golfers who are mugged into new gear.

My mint condition Nike Dymo Str8-fit driver was only £50, and it looked as if someone had just taken it out of the wrapper and went "I've changed my mind". I was going to be paying £55 plus postage on Fleabay just to try one.

Suffice to say I'll be popping in and checking on a regular basis for the matching 3 wood and hybrid :)

In no particular order ...

I must have been looking at a different or wrong link. The Aldila shafts listed on the one I looked at were Aldila Pink NV55, Aldila Green NV 65, 75 and 85, Callaway Razr Fit, Fujikura Blur 004. Matrix Radix 4, all as standard, Mitsubishi Fubiki 69, UST Proforce V2 65 and 75 as premium and Matrix Xcon 6 as Super Premium.

Question - What's the difference between these shafts and would a mid teen handicapper notice the difference?

Lefties are 2nd class citizens as far as the manufacturers and retailers are concerned.

I'm not a member of a club yet but someone suggested I go to Sundridge Park where they have just opened their own private driving range that also has a state of the art teaching and custom fitting section. Callaway fitting centre, Optifit or whatever system, more shafts than you can shake a stick at, launch monitor, high speed cameras, left/right handed, whatever you want. "have you got the RAZR Fit head?". "No, sorry. Callaway haven't sent us any left handed ones yet".

Checking around, the retailers in the area seem to a) not have the L/H head in, b) don’t have the range of shafts, c) can’t cope with L/Handers on their monitors, d) a combination of a) b) and c) although to be fair, I haven't yet tried Kingswood - but I suspect they will be no different.

Homer. It wasn't really a fishing trip - I don't do that. If I get the service, they get the business. If they could have done what they said they could do then we could have had a deal. Looks like Callaway and AG have missed out on £300 or so of my hard earned.

But it did feel nice though ....:mmm:

Oh. And by the way guys, thanks for your replies.

OS. Yep. Long Lane. Used to be a lot better as Bill Woodmans !

I went thre for a ping fitting a few years ago. I ended up in the back room sorting out their demo ping clubs. Their full range was 1 red dot and one black dot 7 iron. Still, I struck a deal until the main man overheard and vito'd it. Went to Gainsborough in the end which was a different grade totally.

I've only tried the Proforce of those, and it was "meh" in my hands. Trouble is everyone's different!

I'd argue that there's a big difference in shaft weight, which I would say you, as a mid-teen h/cap would notice.
