I am referring to square drivers.

Two years ago all the hype regarding drivers were the Cally and Nike square drivers and their added forgiveness and distance. Yet reading through this months mag, it looks like it was just a fad.

Was it a technological breakthrough or just marketing bull, or were we just not convinced and it was ahead of it's time?

I really like my square headed driver, and like the look of the new Nike ones too. Would definately give them a look if you want extra control off the tee.

Right so we've tried metal woods..oversized..trampoline faces, not good, what the @uck are we gonna sell to those idiot handicap golfers out there who believe that we can give a crap swing 20 extra yards? I know boss, how about a square shaped driver? The dick heads have never seen one of those before it's a sure fired winner. The rest is history. There are still plenty on offer out there. Personally I didn't like the way they looked and so never got tempted. I know some on here that have tried them and thought there was something in the design. Surely though it is like any new release, there has to be a sales angle to attract the public. Every manufacturer does it on every bit of kit they sell

The sound, unfortunately, is ear-drum shattering.

I had a FTi and hit it as far and as straight as anything I've owned. Shape was ok but the noise was just too much. I got embaressed using it, especially at the range where several glasses and windows didn't survive the decibels.

Agreed, it's similar to the sound you'd get from hitting a ball with a sock full of concrete attached to the leg of a chair.

The FTiQ sounds much better than the FTi.

I've dabbled (bought the non-tour version FTiQ off Colint) but the closed face made me pull everything left.

I've just bought the tour version off Callway pre-owned (it's been sitting in my desk at work for over a month now) and so I pikced it up this week.

Will try and get out to the driving range this weekend.

I briefly had an FTiQ and thought it sounded like hitting the ball with an empty baked bean tin.

That and the fact that I was rubbish(erer) with it made it an easy decision to get rid.

Added distance? No way Jose (not mine anyway). I think they are a little short of their normal brothers.
Added forgiveness? ... a tiny bit perhaps
Added straightness? ... yes, I think so.

I have a square driver and a square 3 wood. I'm not mad keen on either t.b.h. but they do work well.

Last game I played, I used neither..

I've just bought a second hand square FTiQ, which plays shorter than my traditional shape driver, but much, much straighter. Its paid for itself in vouchers in just a couple of rounds, so I won't be changing any time soon. Might swap back to the old one in summer, when I need the extra distance on the full length course.

One of my regular playing partners uses the Nike square one - if that is straighter than a traditional driver then he needs some help!

I've been far more consistent with my square Nikes than any other driver (+ woods). Not longer, but certainly more forgiving. Maybe it's the rest of the design, maybe it's placebo, but sticking with them for 2011.
