• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Well , I have never do that before!

Only if you practice swing was improving the line to your ball. If you took a practice swing ten yards from your ball, and knocked leaves off a tree there woud be no penalty. If you knock leaves off with your actual swing at the ball you must carry on and hit the ball. If you aborted that would be a penalty.

er......there's a bit on the middle of this, somewhere...

the penalty would be under the rule relating to improving your lie. stance, swing etc - knock off one or two of a few hundred (willow?) and there really isn't an issue because they won't make a difference; however you can have a situation where there's a single annoying leaf that you keep catching with your practice swing - until you knock it off....that will be a penalty :)

13-2 is the rule - 13-2/0.5 covers the issue in detail

I had an argument about this a couple of years ago. I had a branch of a tree halfway up my backswing that was thick enough that it wouldn't break if I hit it as hard as I could. On one of my practice swings I hit it and a couple of leaves fell off the tree and the guy I was playing with was adamant that it was a penalty.

On the subject of not completing the swing....
