I played today in a foursomes on the 8th, I waked up to my partner' drive, it was raining heavily and I had my brolly in the holder on the trolley. I pushed the trolley away and took my swing and hit the underside of the brolley at the top of the backswing! I couldnt finshed the rest of the swing so had to take a penalty. I felt a right idiot.

What silly things have others done?

Not done anything like that myself but seen a friend drive his remote controlled trolley go out of range and head into a river! also seen a driver dented on a driving range as the lights were a little low!!

Why is that a penalty Louise ? You can abort a shot surely ? It is the downswing that matters. If you had a tree behind you and you intended to hit the ball, but caught the tree on you backswing it wouldn't be a penalty. Have I missed something ??

In a recent mixed foursome event which was played in horrible conditions, the guy hit the tee shot into a lateral water hazard and after retrieving the ball , his partner was required to drop the ball under penalty then strike the next shot.

The guy was under his umbrella (as were the other couple,) so his vision was impaired when his partner "dropped" the ball and to his consternation the ball mysteriously disappeared after the drop had taken place. They searched everywhere ----------- absolutely no trace of the ball so it was eventually declared "lost". It was only later when they reached the sanctuary of the Clubhouse that the ball was found------- in the hood of the female golfers' anorak!

Strange -------- but true!

Oh, I thought that once I addressed the ball and taken the club back then whatever happened it counted as a shot, my partner was under the same impression.

Incorrectly declare that they should be penalised one stroke when they shouldn't.

Embarrassing, yes. Penalty, not as far as I know.

I hope not anyway. I've had loads of putts where I've taken the club back then pulled out of the shot because I didn't like the feel of it.

the club bounced off the umbrella, so there was a downswing of a short, although, I then turned away, so didnt actually complete the downswing.

I guess i will have to put it down to experience, it was still a dumb thing to do.

Must have been an illegal drop, unless it was many years ago!

Sorry to be the 'bearer' of bad news Louise (Do you get it ?) Think of Tiger Woods when he pulls out of the shot a fraction before he hits it. No penalty. If you take a back swing in the trees, and dislodge a twig etc, you would have to complete the swing, otherwise that would be a penalty. You would be deemed to be improving your path to the ball. Don't think there is a specific section for hitting your brolley in the rules.:)

Just a question on this - if it was a practice swing when you caught the tree on your backswing and in doing so "chopped off" some leaves, is that a penalty? I am told it is as a result of improving your lie and am always ultra-careful in such situations but have never bothered to look up the rule :o - anyone know?

we have take it to the side of the fairway rule all though winter, so usually you just walk up to your ball and kick it to the site.

Playing in the first open of the year at Golspie a few years ago. Hit my drive walked up to the ball and kicked it in the rough... Doh.

My playing partner laughed then did the same... Doh.

missed buffer by the penaulty:(

Only if you practice swing was improving the line to your ball. If you took a practice swing ten yards from your ball, and knocked leaves off a tree there woud be no penalty. If you knock leaves off with your actual swing at the ball you must carry on and hit the ball. If you aborted that would be a penalty.

I have teed off outside the markers more than once.:o Not infront of them but to the side thinking that one of the markers was behind me. Did it recently at the Forum Meet at West Hill. I am not used to teeing off first.
