high bounce is the way forward!!

thanks to robobum i am now the proud owner of a 54degree vokey and i can honestly say its an absolute weapon. it has 14 degrees of bounce and i find that its virtualy impossible to hit it fat when chipping around the green.

i think anyone suffering with their short game by duffing chips should invest in a high bounce wedge. i cant see this club leaving my bag for a long time. my nephew used it the other day and is now in the market for the same thing. 54 is perfect for around the greens. nice wee flight and bit of run or a nice bit of check off a tight lie.

pleased as punch :D

Pleased you've found a wedge that works for you.
However, all that bounce must have an affect when you try and open the face for a lob shot? (unless you have on of those LW things)
Edit. Just checked your sig, you have got one of those things :(

"it has 14 degrees of bounce and i find that its virtually impossible to hit it fat"

I must be missing something?

Me too

If you take the ball before the turf the only thing the bounce will effect is the depth of the divot..... Unless I've missed something (Which is entirely plausable  )??

Gary at our level its not the bounce ole son, its a mind thing , sorry but it is , wel its a confidence thing ... some days il stitch my chips & my bump & runs wil behave , other days its like ive never held a club before .. bounce hasnt changed..

But if you have found a club that gives you that confidence, good for you & long may it last mate

by hitting it fat i mean the leading edge of the club entering the ground before making contact with the ball.

if you open the face slightly then i find it nearly impossible for this to happen. i did some experimentation the day i got the wedge. i attempted to hit 3 up to 3 inches behind the ball and the club still didnt enter the ground and still managed to nip the ball off the tuff and completed the shot.

5 wedges in the bag as i am rubbish with woods and only get myself into trouble with them. i used 4 in my round ysday. didnt require the lob wedge. considering dropping the 52 for my 3 iron.

If you don't have the hands too far forward at impact, then hitting the ground early just results in the club bouncing of the grass like it would off a range mat, due to the bounce.

I play some pitches like this with my 52 which has 8 degrees of bounce, with my only swing thought being 'hit the ground with the back of the club'.

Sounds odd but it works for me.

Which is all well and good when the ground is firm, but not so good if the ground is soft?

Can playing this kind of shot cause you to thin the ball?

I have standard bounce (Around 10*) in my 2 Mizzy wedges, but I'm a bit of a digger so a low bounce option would probably break my arm after it digs into the turf

For me, I worry about making a good ball first contact. If I've done everythig else right, if I miss, it's not going to be too bad.

I can't imagine the ground being soft enough so that the back edge of a wedge would dig into it. If it did I'd imagine I'd be sinking while I was playing the shot. :)

As for the second point, I don't know. I wouldn't have thought the way you play a chip/pitch would make the leading edge be 1/2" off the ground at contact without some other fault being present.
I guess if you're that far behind the ball then the face might be off the ground by the time it's got to the ball and you thin it, but the same shot played with the hands well forward would result in a fat.

I just read about it, tried it and liked it. I don't do it all the time, but it's useful sometimes.

I'm a bit of a digger

Are you sure?

I thought I was because of the divots I took with a full swing and consequently used the 'diggers' method for chips and pitches.

I tried an experiment which suggested that I was a slider, so tried that method and found it works better for me. Now I use both depending on the shot to be played.

Apologies Gary, I did mean on full shots.

However, If I'm chipping with a wedge (52 or 58) I do still take a small divot as I tend to be a little more agressive.

If I'm using somethig with less loft, say a 7 or 8 iron, I tend not to take a divot.

Must say, don't think I have ever taken a full swing with a wedge. The longest swing is somewhere between a half/three quarter, for me.

the 54 wedge is king. sat at our first hole hitting 8 balls at a time and for a change decided not to try and work the ball but hit it straight. the result was surprising. i was getting the ball to spin back up to 4 paces and even holed one by spinning it back into the hole. first time i did that in my life. think it was about 60 yards. two guys playing a different hole seen me do it and i just had to play it cool like it happens all the time even though i was over the moon.

oh and as far as playing wee chips around the green, i feel like im cheating with the 54. playing it quite aggressive and getting them to check up quickly at the hole and the high bounce eleminating any fat chips. easily my fav club in the bag atm!
