Ok ....probably a simple answer to this but having seen a number of posts that say ....

need a new wedge because the grooves have worn out.....

why do we not see any saying I need a new 7 iron because the grooves have worn out????

Sorry if its an obvious answer!

Thanks

Could it be that a player might use a wedge far more often than a 7 iron in the overall scheme of things?

Cheers bob obvious when you know....I take it they are softer to generate more spin?

No! Forged/softer metals are generally perceived to "feel" better and give physical feedback through the hands about the quality of the shot.
Until very recently only blades were made of forged steel, but this has changed in recent years. Spin is generated by the surface and grooves of the club and has nothing to do with the metal. 7 irons don't get so much wear!!!

i have a 56 deg vokey that looks pretty worn. the groves are alot shallower at the bottom compared to the ones at the top. does that mean my club is a write off
