Wedge from the green, who's done it?

Only seen it done once at Newark when playing in a fourball. The guy did a practice swing and took a divot and it was a Gud in. Which he replaced, kind of, anyway he played his shot and took another divot and put his ball 3ft from the pin. He walked up to the flag pleased as punch.
gaz who was the member that had signed us in literally had steam coming out of his ears. It looked a pigs ear.

Personally I wouldn't risk damaging a green. Can you imagine how you would feel coming onto a green and finding a big divot from a previous player?

My point exactly, and another thing is how long will it take before it looks more like a "par-3 T-top" rather than a green, not long I shouldn't think !...:smirk:

Not something I've done or ever contemplated doing. Don't even think I'd consider it in a monthly medal and certainly wouldn't dream of it in a bounce game.

I fairly new and always thought that the rules were only a putter was to be used on the green.
Every time the ball is on the fringe or close to the green I always use a 8iron like a putter and have great result.

The need for it doesn't come up very often.

If it's the best choice then you should go for it.

Saying you wouldn't entertain the idea is nearly as silly as someone saying they would never putt from off the green.

be aware of the conditions. Have the right technique and there shouldn't be a problem.

You are playing a chip or pitch at most. Not a full blooded gouge with a wedge.

If you land on another green (not a double green) other than the hole your playing, you must take relief.

Most clubs would kick you off for doing stuff like this and with good reason, thousands and thousands of £'s and years and years of hard work will have been put into the very greens you expect to be all but perfect for you when you play on them yet your actually discussing whether or not it's a viable option to run the risk of screwing up all the hard work that the greenkeepers have put into them not to mention buggering them up for every other visitor to or member of the club just so that you can keep your shot count down, unbelievable !...

I have only done it a couple of times when the design of the green and the silly placement of the pin position made it impossible to putt.

My grandfather was supposed to be a bit of a wizard negotiating stymies with his mashie niblick

As a direct reply to the thread title:

If you saw the size of my divot after hitting a wedge, you'd appreciate why I have never done, nor ever will hit a wedge from a green.

I wouldn't dream of doing it. My short game is wonky enough and I'd cause carnage. I would like to see it vetoed, even in tour events. There's the potential to damage the green (as seen) and how can that be fair to fellow competitors.
