Had a lesson last week and the pro said my grip was too strong and causing me a few problems. The club face was closed at the top which resulted in me holding off the club on my downswing, getting "underneath" the ball and basically not releasing properly.

This was causing me to block the ball or hit push fades/slices.

Anyway after working on it for the past week and trying to weaken my grip along with opening the club face on the way back, I've started to hit the odd draw and hook.

I thought weakening my grip would cause me to fade the ball at first until I was used to it? Thoughts?

My thoughts and not necessarily fact, is that your mind now knows it doesn't have to hold the club off in the downswing because you're grip is weaker and is just overdoing it a little bit.

It will just just a bit of getting used to to find the right release.
