We’re the penalties correct in this scenario?

Played in a medal today and had an unusual occurrence:

Player B played second shot on 5th hole from rough - in the area where all 3 of us had driven - and theN I found player C ball sitting down and said ‘Titleist 4’ to which player C replied Yes that’s mine.

When player B went to play his third shot he discovers he had hit wrong ball (player C’s) for his second shot. Player C then realised that he hadn’t played his ball - nor was it player B’s ( we decided it had been previously lost.

As we all walked back so player C could play his ball from correct place for his now 4th shot (2 shot penalty for playing wrong ball) we realised that we hadn’t found player C’s original tee shot. As we got close the group behind found the ball,- again in lush rough.

I determined that both players were deemed to have played wrong balls and were due 2 shot penalties - and strokes played at wrong balls didn’t count.

Was that correct?

Assuming more than 3 minutes had passed, hadn't player C also lost his ball?

Player B played a "2nd shot" at a ball. It turned out not to be his ball - so it was a wrong ball therefore incurring a 2 shot penalty. When he realised this, he should have gone back to continue looking for his own ball. (If there was any of the 3mins left that is - after deducting the time upto when he stopped looking when he thought he'd found it). If he didn't find it, it was lost, & he should have gone back to the tee under stroke & distance. He should have been playing 3 off the tee plus two penaly strokes = 5. (But you don't say what what player B actually did. How did he finish the hole - if at all?)

Player C also played a 2nd shot at a ball - which turned out to be not his. So again, wrong ball, 2 penalty shots. They thought they found it (when player B discovered it lying where he'd hit it). But as they walked back, they discovered they hadn't found C's ball after all. So again, they had any balance of time left over from the original 3 minutes to continue looking. If the group behind pointed it out within that balance, then C could play where it was found. That would have been playing his 2nd shot, plus 2 penalty shots = 4. If it was outside the total of 3mins, then it was lost and he should have gone back to tee under stroke & distance - which would have been playing 5 off the tee like B. (But again you don't say how C actually completed the hole?)

As we got back to the area where we had played our ‘2nd’ shots from we saw the group behind Pick up a ball which turned out to be player Bs. He dropped it at the position they found it. This was within a total of 3 minutes of looking for player C’s ball. B had not spent any time looking for his ball before taking his 2nd stroke at what turned out to be a wrong ball

Sorry, now you have me confused. The group behind found whose ball? Did they find C's (as sort of implied in original post). Or was it B's as stated in post #5.

I'm impressed the group behind managed to find his ball, all within 3 minutes of your group passing that spot. They must have been right up your backside and playing speed golf?

How long was it after player C started looking for his ball before player B discovered he had played the wrong ball and Player C identified that ball (played by B) as his. More than 3mins? And likewise by the time player B got to area where his ball lay (clock starts ticking) then finds and plays player Cs ball, and then gets to that ball - realises it isn't his and goes back to keep looking - following group say they fnd a ball - it's Player Bs - all within 3mins?

They both played the wrong ball. As soon as each had played their stroke at the wrong ball the counting ended, and the penalties are to be applied. Then restart playing and counting. Whether either or both were past their time allowed to look for and find their ball - only you'll know.

No time was spent looking for player Bs ball. He had played C’s for his second stroke thinking it was his. Once the mistake was discovered we walked back towards the area From where we had all played and as we got close the group behind (in a buggy) - who we had already waved through as we started walking back - found a ball which B identified as his.
He then played is 4th shot and then C dropped where B had played his ball from and we continued to play the hole out.

Player C thought he might have a case for no penalty as B had played his ball - but I pointed out that might have been the case if he hadnt identified And played the found ball which belonged to none in our group.

I did point out that if C hadn’t played that ball he would have gone back to the tee Thinking his was lost so would have incurred a penalty anyway
