Warning - Low Bridge

It's not the bridge though it's a bloody great rsj 6 feet beofre the bridge that bears the brunt of the damage. Now we had a bridge in Cornwall that took ALL the impact itself and still stands even causing them to build a bypass for the area.

They even installed a HUGE flashing warning sign that only lit up when an over height vehicle was heading for disaster. Still happened though!

To be honest ther're probably taller than that.
There's always a bit of leeway to allow for changes in road elevation for long vehicles, and the road canver on the left turn.
As a truck driver this is very embarrassing, there really is no excuse for not knowing the height of the vehicle your driving.
Bloody muppets. Funny though :rofl:

Don't know the rules but I assumed it says 11'8" but really its 12' or something like that - more that most trucks seemed to just have an inch taken off the top!

You wont be far off there cookelad. But you can never be 100%. The only safe course of action is, if your vehicles height is plated as 11'9''
and the bridge says 11'8'', then DON'T GO UNDER IT. The only thing i can think of in mitigation, is the heights are plated in meters(4m) and these clowns think its yards.
They are yanks after all :p
 
i work in signalboxes , when this happens it causes no end of problems for us and passengers, job stopped till everything is checked out

If a sign is 4 meters and you think it's 4 yards you should get under it easily as a yard is less than a meter.

4 yards is 3.65 meters so you'd comfortably get under a 4m bridge in your 4yrd high truck.

Clowns?.....

I'am sorry justone, i thought my post was quite clear. Obviously i was wrong.
I was reffering to the plated height of the vehicles, ie: vehicle plated at 4m, yank driver thinks this is the same as 4yd, so tries to wing it, hoping what leeway there is, is enougth (totally unprofessional, but then there are muppets in all professions).
May i suggest that next time you are confused by a post written by someone who may actually know what they are talking about, you ask for clarification before you refer to them as clowns?

I'm not referring to anyone as a clown, just trying to understand why YOU say THEY are clowns.. it's YOU doing the referring not me.

I wouldn't say someone was a clown if they are driving a truck that has it's height written (plated?) in meters if all bridges are measured in feet/inches. I'm sure not all people who crash into bridges are Yanks.

You are quite right, not every one who crashes into bridges are yanks, but they are ALL unprofessional(i apologise to all professional clowns out there) clowns.
As a driver it is YOUR responsibility to know the height of your vehicle. In the UK it is advisable to know this height both in feet and metres. If you do not know ASK, there is no excuse.
As a trucker i'am generally proud of the standard of driver in the UK, so when i see a video like this it is quite embarassing to think that the public may think we are all idiots like these drivers. The fact that they are yanks, well, that was an opportunity i wasn't going to turn down. Shift the blame. Know what i mean? ;)

Why aren't bridges marked with both measurements?.... or are they?

I did drive into a carpark once that had those 'goal posts' that you have to drive under and practically decapitated a company transit van :mad:, spent all afternoon patching it up with fibreglass and respraying it... no one noticed.... not that I'd have admitted to it :p

Whilst I agree in principal with the sentiment it isn't quite that simple. A fair few of those vehicles in that clip were rentals posssibly with drivers who haven't ever driven anything bigger than their SUV. Mostly the ones that said 'Ryder' on the side. Also the height of the vehicle SHOULD be listed in the drivers cab. Only thing with that is for instance in an articulated vehicle the trailer might be a different height to the cab. On a flatbed the 'load' could also be higher than the cab. There is also probably no registered height for that camper thing that fitted under eventually.

I'm a bus driver and we have around 350 vehicles in a mixed fleet of 8 or 9 different vehicle types. ALL of ours have height information in the cabs but one of our types of double deck for instance (we have around 180 d/d in the fleet) all look identical to each other but there are three different vehicle heights. I'm not gonna lie I've had some heart stopping moments where I think to myself 'bloody hell what am I driving?'. Not one of our routes passes under a bridge of less than 5m in our area and all of our vehicles fit under with great ease. Still have some moments though.
 
Hi justone, i agree with you, they should be, but some are not :(. I go under one every now and then that is only marked at 13'3'', must be hardwork for continentals.

Hi mouth, whilst i can't comment on buses, the principles must be the same. If you cannot assertain the height of a vehicle through a plate in the cab or on the trailer you are hitched to, and you have no means of measuring it mechanically(we have a 5m tape in office) then you simply refuse to drive it.
As you know there is no such thing as a rta, someone is always at fault. If you hit a bridge "sorry officer" is'nt going to cut it. Its your responsibility to know the dimensions of the vehicle you are driving, no excuses accepted i'am afraid.
I know what your thinking. "You don't know my transport manager". Arn't they all the same:whistle: ? If they attempt to intimidate you into doing something you know is wrong speak to your union. If you hit something they'll drop you like the proverbial sack of..
Iam sorry mouth if this post seams like i'am preaching, i'am not really. Its your license. You have worked hard to own it. So don't give anyone a chance to take it off you. :thup:

Psst... don't tell anyone, but my car before last was a Shogun. On one of our regular trips to Scotland i loaded the roofrack up and away we go. Just before we join the motorway we pass a supermarket with one of these barriers, and the mooses decided she didn't have enough fags for the journey. Need i go on?? :o... Bloody smokers.

What makes it worse is my "good" lady. How come they can forget were they've left your debit card, the fact you hate sprouts, you don't like creases in your boxers etc, etc...but you make one mistake that leaves her thermal undies blowing round Tesco's carpark ??? Typical :whistle:
