I came upon a link the other day to a Volvo Golf tour that anyone can enter.
http://www.volvogolf.co.uk/

I am interested in having a go at this next Year but there doesn't appear to be too much info on the site, probably because the tour won't be finalised until end December.

Has anyone been involved with this before and can you give me any information on how you found it?

How suspicious you are Sir, it is a genuine request for anyone that may have done this tour and can give me any pointers.

I started playing Golf last Year and would really like to improve my handicap, possibly getting to single figures before the next Summer ends, I see something like this as a good way to improve.

I played in the pairs matchplay this year. Well I say that, but I hacked it round and we lasted one round. Seemed a decent enough event although we had a nightmare getting the match arranged. I think they do a singles event too so might give that a whirl

Oh, I was under the impression it was pre organised events held at different courses around the UK over the Year, with a points system accrued for each event. They do a pairs thing as well?

Coudn't find any info on the cost, although it did say somewhere that a deposit of £30 was required up front for each event. That makes me think it might be an expensive day out.

Trying to get my Brother in Law to join with me but he married my Sis only last Month so that may pushing it ......
The more info I get the more chance I can pull rank on my Sis.....

Yeh it's a legitimate tour and it has it's own order of merit. Win that and you get into a pro-am event with the proper European tour pros.

It's actually in our local paper this week, a local guy who plays of 5 has made it to some upcoming Volvo event somewhere or other in Europe/Rest of the world (can't remember where or what it's called though) :o

You have to PAY to enter each event you play in if you join the tour.

Edit: Just checked and his name is Mark Higgins.

The price for some of the events is laughable though, check out the price for the K-club and a few of the larger venues across the UK.
In fact if memory serves, this year, GM had a competition that gave you free entry into one of the events with a chance of qualifying for the end of year doo.

I thought I read somewhere that it'll cost you about £7,000 to play in all the events (some of them are international)... of course I could be just making that figure up as it could have been a different tour

K Club is 3 night and 4 rounds, the winner also qualifies for the UK Finals. Not that bad for £800 if you want a competitive golf break at a top resort... and you've got the money.

And for that reason....I'm out! :D

I played in 3 of these events this year. One was at my home club, Bearwood Lakes, and the others at Hankley Common and Hayling Island, both courses I had heard about and wanted to play.

I was amazed when scanning the website that some people have played 15 or 20 of these, including overseas trips. Have they not got jobs of families?

Anyway, the events are well organised, and in my opinion, are priced fairly. They play top courses in peak season, mostly, and you get a good lunch, often play 36 holes and the chance to win stuff. The three events I played in were also played off the medal tees, not society tees.

It's superb but expensive. You get what you pay for. I've played a handful of them over the past few years - that's all my money will allow.

Quite a lot of the folks who play on it are millionaires with bags of time on their hands. Other people entertain business clients as these events.

We do a bit of work with Volvo on this and I went to one of the days this summer at Ferndown (piece about it in next issue) and I have to say it was the best run event of this type I have experienced
As other posters have said the days aren't cheap but the courses are all top draw (I'm told there are a couple of v exciting courses being added to the 2011 schedule that you wouldn't belkive they could get a golf day organsied at), everything is incredibly well organised, good prizes (I won a £40 online golf voucher for a NTP) and the lure of a place in the final (all expesns paid pretty much) makes it VFM
Standard of golf is good too - lot of single figure golfers and everyone v friendly

Thanks for the info guys,

I think I will try a tester or Two in 2011 and if it looks as good as some of the feedback then maybe put some cash away for the Year after.

Any other events that you guys know of that would suit a keen golfer?

Yeh, come and play with some of the forum guys :)

The standard is a bit low if Smiffy is there but not everything can be perfect ;)

There's a few lined up for next year... Woodhall Spa, Beau Desert etc etc, details are in the 'arrange a game' section of the forum.

I came across this a few days ago as well.

The last event was at Sawgrass in the USA.

7 nights accommodation in the Sawgrass Marriott hotel and 5 rounds of golf, 3 on TPC Sawgrass for £1585 (flights not included)

I wish I could afford that.
