To go along with my change to AP2's last Sept, I also got myself a couple of Vokey Spin Milled Wedges, a 54* with 8Bounce , and a 60* with 4 Bounce.

Instantly liked them, and now 6mths later am really starting to hit them well, judge distance etc etc.
The 'stop' on them is fabulous, but tonight was a whole new ball game....

75/80yds to the pin, so a nice crisp strike with the 54*, ....looked all over the pin and was,.....hitting the green 5' short, bouncing forward one hop, .....

and then spinning back........I kid you not.....12feet !!!!

I might need to re-think, these babies bite !!! :D

They certainly do nip back.

Wait until the greens are prime for it, I have had huge backspin on good hits.

The only problem I find, and murphthemog has made this comment, is that they can take an awful look of getting used to and infact be slightly inconsistent in the hands of the likes of me.

I have the same problem with the Z TP wedges. I played with HTL and ademac at DOwnshire a few weeks ago and pured a 52 wedge into the 6th. Landed about 5 foot from the pin and then zipped back off the dancefloor and down the banking.

However on the plus side since my ptiching lesson last month my spin control and distance control on shots needing 8, 9 and 10 o'clock swings is getting better week on week and I'm getting more confident and aggressive with my pitching

This time of year, and indeed Sept time too is a tad unrealistic in terms of screw back, as the greens are very receptive, and spin like heck. Wait until the summer, with firm greens to really judge how they go.

I have found (as MWJ has said) that the SM vokeys, for me were way to inconsistent (may be my strike is too inconsistent), and so I have changed to a less agressive wedge. The SMs are in the cupboard, and if we get a draught, may yet find their way back into the bag.

I am not yet convinced that masses of spin is such a good thing. I like check, not screw back.

Exactly, I want the ball to stop and not spin back 10 yards.

Fortunately I think that the greens I have played recently have flattered me and I have been getting plenty of check but as they become more lush, the ball will be more inconsitent.

In the summer though I reckon the spin-milled wedges will be very useful indeed.

The backspin I got today was a first, they have usually so far just hit and checked where they hit, so perhaps I just caught this shot particularly well.

I played against a 1 H/C'er last year who also used Vokey's, and to see the check he could generate from even the most delicate of chips was a joy to watch, and he usually ended up within 2' of the hole from anywhere off the green, IF he missed the green !

My mizuno wedges are really good at checking the ball, I aint really had firm enough greens to get the ball spinning backwards but it does pop backwards out of its pitch mark

I hit the edge of the green on the par 3 10th at my gaff the other day, it was on a temp which was just infront. I looked at the sky caddie and played for the front, the ball screwed backabout 6 foot and stopped level with the pin! I liiiike! :D

TBH, this is the time of year for screwback. Once they firm up, it gets alot harder to spin it back. If you aren't getting it now, you won't do it til Sept time.

I hit a wedge to our par 3 5th last Autumn, it was all over the flag. Pitched about 18" from the cup,,, and spun back off the green into a pot bunker. My son was p!$$!ng himself laughing.... I didn't think it was funny

I don't agree murph. I can't get the ball to spin on the greens because when they land, they plug and just pop out. All spin is lost by the time it takes the second bounce. When they firm up I think the ball will keep spinning because it's not plugging and will then start checking or coming back.

Ahh, mine spin out of the pitch mark, and off down the green like a rocket. Once they firm up, I get one bounce, and through the back. It might spin a bit in the rough, but I haven't noticed. I could look for scorch marks I suppose.

On the subject of Vokeys.....my pro is selling them (old versions, presumably) for £49.99 (were £89.99).

I'm giving some thought to a 60 degree one, after a successful day around the greens with my old Callaway tour L wedge 1996. My "new and improved" pitching technique has given me a new sense of optimism with the blob wedge.
My old one has plain grooves, one with spin milled might make me hit them harder!!

I have to say my pitching lesson last month has given me more confidence with the 60 and my bunker lesson yesterday utilised it. Its now a case of going, 52, 56 and 60 and ditching either my 5 wood, 3 hybrid or 4 iron, or going PW (46) 52 and 58

I like the variety the 3 wedges offer especially now I have the distances on my 7.30, 9 and 10 o'clock swings measured and noted (also done it for the 58) but not sure I can justify the loss of the 5 wood (use it on all the par 5, off the tee on the 13th and for the longer par 4's) or the hybrid (off the tee on two par 3's and when in light rough instead of the 5W) but don't want to lose the 4 iron either as it there will be too big a gap.
