i have used contacts for golf for some time but as i travel / drive alot and feel wearing glasses is better instead of dry eyes etc i am thinking about a pair of varifocals again.

Many say they are a nightmare for golf but i am seriously considering wearing them again

I would aim to get a pair of rimless frames

Any guidance of places to go instead of specsavers ?

In the past my glasses have cost £200 + ( i think frames are £160.00 )

From my experience of wearing variofocals the main cost is in the lenses. There are various options as to the amount of distortion of the lens especially the higher magnification or "reading" part of the glasses. For playing I have found the lenses with the least distortion, which also happen to be the most expensive, are best especially when it comes to lining up putts. I also have transition lenses. My last prescription was for new lenses fitted to old frames and cost in excess of your budget.

Bifocals and varifocals have been shown to increase risk of falls because of the mixed messages the different parts of the lens produce, probably not a good idea for any sport on uneven ground.

rimless tend to be more expensive, irrespective of where you go.
I've had both but imo it's less to do with the frames than with the different lens cuts as almost invariably you see the ball through the wrong part of the lens, and it can appear to hop all around the tee; mind you a dark frame can be obtrusive.
I have a set of single vision distance glasses for golf which work a little better (well two pairs as the optician put polaroid on for free and I then had to get some made for lower light levels).

I've got a pair of rimmed varifocals and have no problems apart from the rain and the fact that they are progressives so when it goes cold can be a tad dark
