evening all
does hinging your wrists on your back swing really improve
your swing when using irons?

had a lesson recently and was told to hinge my wrists on my back swing ive got the hang of this while im using my woods but but cant hit my irons this way

can anyone give me any advice or drill i can do at home that might help?

cheers

Depends how much wrist hinge. My pro spent ages getting me to hinge less because I was overhinging, swinging past parrallel coming into the ball too steep and hitting a lot of fat shots.

A good position for me is having my wrists at 45 degrees at the top of the backswing something I'm still working on achieving consistently. You can see what I mean if you want by looking at the swing videos on my blog.

Good luck with it all.

To me, if you dont hinge your wrists then you arnt getting the potential energy your arms and hands can produce into speed and torque through the ball properly. Unhinging on the way down to the ball is called lag, without some lag the swing will be wooden and not very powerful.

Here's a great video for you!

I could get to like that guy. Most amateurs could learn more from that fella's 2 videos than they could from 50 lessons with their own pro..... I hope Homer is paying attention!!

I think your pro is trying to get you into the position on the right hand picture, but then I'm only a pro and dont know anything

I always thought unhinging on the way down was called casting. To create lag, you need to have your wrists cocked for as long as possible.

Casting is when you un-hinge the wists too early in the downswing

Too early? No such thing.....

(RG runs into a hole in the ground through embarrassment).

I have a good hinge "apparently"

I have no idea about angles etc, only that my hand is almost kind of level with my wrist. I wore a watch that dug in if I got it wrong untill I learnt the "feel" of how it should be.

My hinge before correction was causing all sorts of rubbish and a weak strike, now I've got my 7 Iron back upto an average 150yds with a ball flight that makes me cry with joy (most times) :D

Keep at it and you to can be like me and still be rubbish at golf but look great whilst doing it

Boom, boom. :)

I'm disappointed nobody has found a good youtube drill to help the OP. I've been trying to find an L to L or similar.
