How do they do a draw for the US Open & is it the same format for most big tour events?

Seems like every large tour event throws up the 'juicy' groups for the viewers and I know that some comps will really only have household names so will always get groups of household names playing together but I do wonder what criteria is applied to the draw?

Is it like the Champions League where teams are deliberately kept apart through seeding or country of origin (obviously not this criteria in golf but as an example)

Tiger, Rory & Adam is a helluva 3-ball, amateurs seem to always get drawn with past champions, strong UK group to keep the Brit viewers happy, it just seems every tournament has these types of groups and I wondered if any criteria was applied in a draw format or is it supposed to be entirely random

(I'm not overly fussed if there is some form of criteria/seeding carried out to create groups I just never see it mentioned or referenced)

Seems after a bit of googling that the 'draw' that many sports news websites refer to is indeed anything but

Apparently a couple of lads from the USGA have a meeting and put whomever they like together using a few informal guidelines such as world rankings, TV audiences, national interests etc etc with a bit of havin a larf thrown in to some groups i.e three guys with similar names/initials etc but pretty much its whatever groups they fancy really!

Not that its a huge surprise as something had to be used to always get the groups but its certainly about as far from a draw as you can really get, so why would it be referred to as such and I wonder is there any downside to the competitors themselves?

I'm a bit surprised that they want McIlroy and Woods in the same group surely it suits the TV ratings to have them in opposite halves of the draw, I assume Mickelson is in the other half, as now Thurday 'morning' and Friday afternoon both of the two biggest names will be in their respective hotel rooms!

TV has a massive say on the draw I would imagine... Im not overly sure you'd ever knowingly want to be drawn with Tiger. Must be a nightmare to play with... Personally Id have spiced it up and put Sergio out with Tiger and added a couple of gum shields! :smirk:

This is Strokeplay Golf, not Tennis o Matchplay Golf!

Groupings and Tee times - it's not a Draw! - are done purely for TV purposes, though there is a traditional grouping (Last Year's Champion, Last Year's Open winner, US Amateur winner).

Well aware, but they still go out in 2 halves there's a morning and afternoon half on both Thursday and Friday! I'm saying that to me it makes more sense to split the World No 1 & 2 up and have 1 playing morning Thursday afternoon Friday and the other playing afternoon Thursday and morning Friday.

didn't realise that tiger had got his am status back last year ...:D

Can't help thinking that part of the reason Rory has been so flakey this year is that tiger has got inside his head. As such I think it is a knock to his chances that he is with TW on thurs and fri. Would like to be wrong on this, obviously.

Here me thinking Ernie Els won the Open last year and Webb Simpson won the US Open.
