Uphill par 3s

12th at Seaford Head. It is a great hole but very difficult if you can't get the ball high. It is also an utter B to climb, so it is known locally as Heart Attack Hill :)

When a youth and member of East Ren I recall really struggling with its 7th and 11th holes…both uphill par 3s of longer than 200yds. Cracking holes though.

Reckon the 7th at Hankley Common is one of my fave uphill par 3s…though it’s 16th is also a tricky devil. Not long par 3s but challenging and v pretty.

KP club in East Yorkshire used to have a par 3, 200y uphill with a huge tree blocking you on the left. Ridiculous

4 was a good score

I have my only hole in one on an uphill par 3 😎 I’m pretty decent at them tbh

Still can happily say they’re normally utter pap to play

I don't particularly like any of our par 3's, 3 of them are long off the whites - 194,190 and 201 yards. The 8th is uphill (190 plays more like 205) to a green that does not have a flat area on it - anything over 20ft can easily turn into a 3 putt. The 6th is the shortest at 153 yards to a raised green protected by a rockface above a pond, and a front bunker. Lovely hole but the amount of times I misjudge the wind and pull the one club less than I need is actually embarrassing. Had one straight at the flag yesterday with an 8 iron that hit the top of the bank and just made the fringe... I literally walk away from the 5th thinking, "this is a 7 iron, this is a 7 iron", step on the tee, check the yardage on my watch, and think "I can get an 8 iron there" 🤡

Put every one of them in the bin!
normally ridiculously long as well.absolute abomination! yet to play a good one yet
I don’t mind them but I do find it hard to argue against your point as I’m not a fan of blind shots. The 3rd at my place is a two tier green so you have to know it (which is why I hate blind shots) and our 10th is 180-210 front to back off whites. I’m used to them and they are big greens which helps but it’s easy to bogey them at any standard.

Our flat par 3s are generally more difficult.

Are we trying to make all holes on a course easy and remove any challenge?

I am not a fan of blind shots in to greens but see no problem with uphill holes where the green and flags can be seen or at least noted before reaching that hole.

We have one uphill par 3 where I play and it's difficulty is ranked at 5, there are not many players that do not get a shot at that hole, When playing the previous hole it is easy to note where the flag is on the green in relation to depth and it easy to see from the tee where it is in relation to side to side position.

We also have one par 4 where the shot is relatively blind but also flag position can be noted when playing the previous hole.

Love em! Not at pretty generally, but a find them a real leveller. Big hitters hitting high lofted clubs which get effected by the wind, shift hitters hitting lower lofted clubs and having to negotiate front of green troubles, love em!

While not a fan of blind shots I remember a par 3 hole (I think its at Dollar) that seems almost vertical that was fun to play. Also I think its the 18th at Kinghorn where a sherpa wouldn't be out of place
But for the most part I want the flag/hole on a par 3 to be visible from the tee

We have a 165 extremely uphill par 3 and on a windy day it’s normally into. I’ve seen me hit as much as a 3 wood on that hole. It’s a very hard par 3 but also good because playing stroke play it’s helps a lot getting a few strokes back against the bandits I play with lol

The think about amateur golf and par 3's, is we expect to hit the green from the tee. At 200 yards, with accurate dispersion, I only have a 5 wood which will get to front edge, with a roll or bounce.

It's unnatural to play and iron and a wedge for us shorter hitters - we all love to go for it - but I'll judge each at the time.

The 18th at Leasowe is an uphill 190 ish par 3, with the clubhouse balcony usually rammed with people watching. Still a nice hole.

I take it you're referring to the 12th at Chester? 🤣
Used to hate that hole, played it well maybe half a dozen times

Aye there was some lads on the 13th tee who seen it go in would have been nice to see it drop but never mind

It was the 6th at seaham yesterday that brought this into my head 170 playing 190 Although the 7th tee shot was worth the walk up

Is anyone familiar with the first hole at Winterfield GC in Dunbar. It is a 230 yards par 3 with a huge bank up to the green. If you don’t reach it is a definite lost ball.

Most play it as a par 4. A stupid hole of the highest order.

Downhill par 3s are the best. I love being able to see the scope of the hole, and watching the ball head towards it. Even when it ends up 10 yards off the green it’s still better than Uphill par 3s.

Utter rubbish of a hole. I was talking to someone a few weeks ago who was a member there and somewhere else. He said he usually walked past the 1st and went straight to the second. He just didn't bother with it (he didn't play competition golf there). I can fully understand his view.

Agreed, the 3rd hole at my club is a wonderful par three, about 170 yards. You play from a high tee. It has a narrow front to the green and is wider at the back. There are seven bunkers surrounding the green. Anything missing the green will end up in the ones left and right of the green.

Here’s a pic found on line, probably a drone photo.
