Uphill par 3s

but 212 yards up hill is going to be closer to 230 to hit. Very vey few handicap golfers can hit an iron 230 carry, and the ball won't roll on very easily, so taking woods, which won't stop on the green.

So it is a par 3 that is nigh on impossible to hit the green in regulation, what's the point in that, what is that testing
Its slightly plateaued but not really uphill an accurate shot from a short hitter can be run up onto the green, there are bunkers at the sides at the front but the entrance is clear. Or you can play short , it gives you options which is what golf is about, yes it's a tough hole . Some holes should be tough
It is testing your decision making . Do I go for the green do I run it up do I play it short?

going for the green or laying up is not a decisoon that should be made for Par 3s. GIR for Par 3 is 1 if you have to risk it in order to hit GIR on a par 3 that is a poor design.

That's a great design for a short par 4, can hit it one, but risk if you get it wrong or lay up, but not a par 3

Where is the decision making? All I've seen on long par 3's is people hitting as close to the green as possible then trying to get up and down to save par if they miss the green. Never seen anyone lay up to their favourite wedge distance.

As a former low handicap golfer I would rather give shots on a par 3 than any other hole.

Joining the horrendous Ayrshire Par 3's club I think the 17th AND 18th at Girvan would run the Prestwick one pretty close.
When my daughter played the 18th at Girvan for the first time I purposely said nothing.
She stood on the tee and said 'come on Dad give us a clue where the hole is'.

There is an uphill par 3 at Port Glasgow GC, can't remember which hole but if you don't hit the ball high you won't get up.

Agree that short ones are the best. Postage Stamp, 17th Sawgrass, 7th Pebble, 9th and 12th Blackmoor, 11th Hayling, 4th Suuningdale Old, 5th at Lahinch

So many good ones to choose from but you rarely hear anyone talking about great long par 3's, only one that comes to mind is Calamity at Portrush.
That's the one that came to mind for me, couldn't remember if it was Port Glasgow or Greenock. If I remember right the green wasn't even just over the hill.

Why on earth is it a good design for a par 4 but a bad design for a par 3? People hit the ball different lengths a short par4 may be unreachable for short hitters for whom the equivalent hole would be a par3 by definition but can be played as a two shooter if the player so desires.

Well maybe you play with people who are long hitters or who don't think much.
We have an excellent par3 that I regularly choose to play short to.

Surely that’s depending on the hole , the players ability and their HI

there are many that have HC’s where they are no supposed to reach a par 3 in 1

Just the same as pars that are supposed to be reached in 2 etc

When I started playing I was told Par 3s were a test of your iron skills.

That’s changed now for the worse imo.

At Lee Park there was a 99yd hole that was a card wrecker if you missed the green.

But as I get older the short holes are getting longer😂

Our uphill par 3 can reach 190+ yards from the back tee.
Plays about 10 or 11 yards longer
3 bunkers in front so you have to carry 170 to make the green...rubbish right
Fortunately it slopes towards you so you pitch on an upslope
SI 8
CVG plays it as a par 4...
Into the wind I have to hit a slightly choked down 4 wood

Our 8th is 181 uphill and usually plays about 1 club more than the yardage. It is protected by a deep bunker on each side of the green with a very narrow entrance. I’m always happy to walk off this hole with a 3.

Try the 7th at Honiton. 225 yards uphill. Many times you hit driver and still cannot reach the green. At least the bunkers are to the side of the approach to the green. Oh and the green slopes heavily from front to back.

That's a cracker but a real bogey hole for me.

I think the Berkshire Red 16th is also slightly uphill and is a beast especially in summer when anything short or with backspin rolls back off. The 18th on the same course is also a bogey hole for me.

I'll give you Swinley 4th and Berkshire Red 16 as good uphill holes. But a downhill par 3 is always much more aesthetically pleasing, so nice to see what you've got in front of you and follow the trajectory of the ball in the air and down to the green.

The Berkshire is home to some fantastic long par 3's. The 1st on the Blue is a huge challenge, over 200 yards and extremely daunting but a great hole/
