Doon old friend you like myself are too old in the tooth to be surprised by it tho ..
On a slightly different note there was a case over here of a guy who was caught driving delivering pizzas , he was banned from driving for drink driving had no licence or insurance , he got free legal aid as he was unemployed ..
Judge said he was trying to provide for his family not just joy riding in what he was doing so applied the probation act & wait for it banned him from driving for a further 3 yrs ( that didnt work the last time) & 3 points on his licence ( what licence ?)
Ive been up in court a few times with my security job as a witness , it whats happening wasnt so serious & wrong it would be funny
For me, what did she have her benefits sanctioned for? It doesn't say cut/reduced, it says sanctioned. Sounds like she's not quite that 'innocent.' And how long is that sanction? Sorry, but there's not enough info to make a reasoned judgement.

With regard to magistrates not being able to apply commonsense. Because of so many crazy sentences handed down in the past, there's now a matrix of applicable sentences. Though not perfect, and obviously there's still the odd stupid magistrate, sentencing is fairer now than its ever been.
She was not fined by the magistrate for missing an appointment [if she did in fact] she was fined for stealing a 75p packet of mini Mars bars.
The 'yardstick' was the sentencing passed down to the two individuals for their crimes.
