Turnberry Changes

Upsettingly I think Trump might be right I desperately want to hate what he's doing but on this the more I think about it, he might have a point - as has been said (a few times now) the tee shot is stunning but after that the hole's pretty average!

The Ailsa is such an iconic track and one that works for both the tournament professionals and handicap golfers alike. I actually played to my handicap there when I was there and found the holes grabbed and kept my attention the whole way round. Whatever is done, I do hope that the R&A input is listened to and the course continues to work for all levels of player.

From my recollection it's a dramatic tee shot followed by a fairly mundane approach/green.

Correct - just played with a bloke this morning who'd worked at Turnberry, and that is pretty much exactly how he described it. And, of course, most visitors don't get to enjoy the exciting bit off the very back tee.

Very true. I was playing from the ladies tees and while the location for the tee shot was dramatic, and iconic, the shot itself was far from intimidating. If it does become a par 3 I hope they manage to design it such that the tee shot gives you pause for thought whichever tee you might play from.

(As per my avatar photo!)

And they probably still won't if the plan is a 245 yard par 3!

Indeed not - I've always had a minor problem with the way that iconic tee is used so extensively in publicity etc, and yet you're not actually allowed anywhere near it.

We all went and got our pics taken "hitting" from the championship tee - it was one of the main reasons for going so I was damned if I wasn't getting the photo!

Not even with your credentials - no hope at all for the rest of us then, just the photo opportunity!

The first time I played the Ailsa both the 9th and 10th were playing into the wind. My playing partners, whom I only met on the first tee, bet me I couldnt carry it over the water and said they would 'sort it' if I got caught on the tee. I think they meant 'sort it' in the "we know the management" instead of the gangster/mafia sense.

Temptation got the better of me and I had a whack, bad form I know, but it had to be done.

All those lovely photos of posters driving off the tee, I have a nice one too.

Has anyone noticed the one similarity..............................

.............the weather is lovely.

Mine was taken in February a couple of years ago. A great winter day but it was pretty chilly - the tea cosy hat was a real necessity.

The only time I've played Turnberry the weather was calm and not a ounce of wind for the round. It was fantastic.

We all played our tee shots off the whites but had a sneaky go off the back pegs.

I'd love to play it again and the £90 twilight rate is a bargain considering twilight starts at 3pm

I wonder what Trump will do and whether he'll follow the guidance the R&A have given. He always worries me as being something of a maverick and loose cannon and hope he doesn't tinker too much

He's a successful businessman, he won't go against the R&A as its in his own intrest to keep them onside.

As I think I've said before I know a member of Doral who told me about the process when he took over that place. And there are a lot of myths about him which are not true. He was very considerate to the members at Doral, getting their input and feedback, and he actually came a cross as relatively humble when he spoke to them.

He loves his golf and as others have said, is not stupid when it comes setting up golf courses and the associated facilities. He just wants to own the best courses in the world and is not afraid of challenging the 'change fearers' for want of a better word in some areas, but from what I heard also respects the traditions of the game.
