Can you do it and be successful, yes of course.

For every "rule" of the golf you can find a very successful tour professional doing it wrong.

However the more "rules" you break the harder it will be to get the club head back to square

I wouldn't do it if it hurts, the golf swing is quite a violent action perform with speed, which is asking for damage especially if it is causing you grief. I for instance allow my right leg to straight a bit and turn my hips a lot, as find I get lower back/left side pain if I do not, so I don't do it.

So many ways to swing a club, find a way that enables you to swing/play without causing pain. I'm not trying to play on tour, so don't need to look or swing like them, just need to hit the ball with some kind of regularity.:)
