Tour de France 2020

I cant watch it Rich as I'm still embarrassed ??

When the race was held here in the UK MrsD and I wandered down to the A20 to watch the race pass and not long before it appeared I saw a fellow on a bike wearing an England Jersey cycling down from the village and said to MrsD "he should be in the race if he was any good" I only realised a few weeks later that he was Jamie Staff and lived in our village ??

It’s good to see ITV4 covering the whole day, just a shame they still use Boardman.i wasn’t aware the road bikes had embraced disc brakes, but see the benefits of the, Im not sure though that cable operated are worth the weight saving over braking performance loss

Disc brakes have been in the peloton for a couple of years now. At first there was a lot of resistance as there was a fear that in a crash, the hot rotors could do a lot of injury to riders, but that doesn't seem to have materialised. I think the performance gains far outweigh the weight penalty, especially as, as far as I'm aware, the UCI still has that rediculous rule regarding the minimum weight for a bike. With modern carbon layups and components, many teams had to resort to adding weights to the frame to get it up to the number. It's great to see them screaming down an alpine descent knowing they can brake well, especially in the wet.

I am probably totally wrong... Usually am... But, as I understand it, discs are now being used as they now have a reliable way of doing quick changes [for the wheels] which wasn't previously possible with discs fitted...

I think you need to watch it before commenting. The crowds are way down, and masked up.

Bit off. Asked a civil question as it is the most watched sporting event and given the current pandemic I just wondered how the organisers were going to handle such massive crowds. If people have already taken the decision not to attend (or not been allowed to) and are wearing masks then fine. Given France were on the list of countries where travel meant quarantine upon return and their high infection numbers thought it was a valid question and not specific to "having to watch"

I am assuming they’ll not allow or will strictly limit any access for spectators anywhere close to the finish of a stage, and may well close access for a good few kilometres towards the end of any climb. Still going to be plenty of spectators along the roadside but they will be able to spread out as no need to be concentrated along the side of any ‘ordinary’ section of road.

Bit off to assume that there is a problem and that the authorities are not bothering to deal with it if you haven’t watched this year’s event.

Maybe if you’d asked about crowd size and what was being done re COVID then the response would have been different?

Discs have been around for a while now and pretty much standard on all road bikes now. Also all of the shifters these days on the TDF bikes will be electronic, small battery located in the frame near the crank (to keep to the 6.8kg minimum bike weight) You can get these on road bikes, just damn expensive!

I love the TDF, still amazes me they can ride for 200km, then do it again, and again and again for 2 weeks. Mental, I cant walk the next day after 150km!!

Also the sheer speed of them, watching yesterday, there was an uphill section, not a hill in their eyes, but steep enough. they were going 23-25kmh! That is a lot of 'Sunday cafe rider' flat road, quick pace! On a proper quick ride, I may average 32kmh, but that's 50km max and flat! Amazes me the performance..

Plus the scenery is out of this world.
