On my local, the par 4 dogleg 18th requires a 200 yard carry over trees followed by 170 yards to the green which is protected by 3 bunkers. The other route is playing the long way which usually results in 3 shots just to get to the green.

Just wondering what sort of tough holes you have on your course?

IMO the hardest hole at goswick is the 11th off the Blues. Its 550 yards with a long carry to the fairway a hard lay up and what is probably the most undulating green on the course. It also has OB down the right and a ditch down the left. Even worse into the wind!!!

We have a par 4 that needs a 220-230 yard shot from the tee, OB all along the left and thick trees on the right. So, no room for a shot that is not straight. Then it's a 90degree up hill dog leg for another 190-240 yards with OB all along the left, plus the green is bunkered on both sides !!

Very tough hole, ok with a bogey, delighted with a par.

At times, all of them. It depends. Our second has OB tight right and even a slight fade is dead as the ground slope towards the OB. Not great to hit the first driver of the day on. I guess the hardest is actually the 16th with OB tight left (not good for my hooky ball flight) and with two trees and rough right to catch and block anything pushed. At 425 yards off the whites it still needs a good blow to the green with a ditch about 20 yards right which catches a lot of sliced long irons or woods, a bunker 30 yards short for the miscued shots and hollows and banks left and right. The green itself has a lot of subtle breaks and is probably the hardest putting hole onthe course.

Our 7th 440 yard par 4 driver 3 wood its always into the wind pond left thick trees right dog leg left up hill green usually lay up pond over green and to the right and all the way down a stream on the left :O nightmare.

2 stand out for me,the 1st hole,a 395 yard par 4...not the longest but very tough, anything from a driver to a mid iron off the tee, depending on the wind,to the apex of the dog leg right where there is a copse of trees, also OOB runs all the way down the right hand side, the 2nd is usually a short iron uphill to a green that is well surrounded by sand and run off areas.

The other 1 is the 530 par 5 6th hole,OOB runs right down the entire hole and I think it is one of the best designed holes you will play anywhere in golf.A tough drive where hitting and holding the fairways is a hard act and rough is waiting on both sides and of course the OOB right then a 2nd played downhill that is fraught with trouble in the way of pot bunkers,OOB and rough then a 3rd played to an elevated 2 tier green superbly guarded by sand and OOB 5 yards through the back of the green!!

Both holes always figure in the top 4 hardest holes on the howdidido course analysis regardless of which direction the wind is coming from.

There's a short par 4 (approx 285yards) at Leatherhead, straight up the hill, out of bounds on the left, out of bounds on the right and out of bounds behind the green. Hit the fairway or you're reloading - no pressure :)

Par 4 16th at our Track, 469yds.

A damn good drive will still leave you facing a 2nd shot of 200+ yds, with oob all down the left, and a fairway dropping away to the right to waiting rough.
Narrow green, which slopes front to back, tight OOB on the left and banked steeply front and right.
A harder hole to Par I have never played anywhere, period.
Here's the shot to green that faces you, the green is where the house in the distance is......

Actually I know the hole justoneuk means. The OB at the back of the green is a matter of yards away and a concrete path means it will certainly roll on and OB. The OB right is tight(ish) and there is a modicum of room left but a real sleeper of a hole and I've yet to score there in three attempts.

I found that one easy. Smashed a driver up the hill (he who dares Rodney), and it was plain sailing after that. Half a wedge, and 2 putts.

3rd hole par 4, 355 off the whites, dog leg left with trees down the right and water hazard down the left, the fairway slopes right to left. You need to be safe and just the right length off the tee to give yourself a shot up hill to the green through the gap in the trees, depending on the wind can mean anything from 7 to 4 iron off the tee for me.

Absolutely destroyed my card last weekend in the final of the medal :( Topped my tee shot, duffed chip, chip to position 'A', topped into water, drop, slice into trees, drop, ill tempered 8 iron which flew out the back of the green into foot long rough, dug it out first attempt but off the green, chip onto green, 2 putts :o signed for a 14 :D :D :D.

That after making par on the first 2 holes, played the rest of the round without carding more than a six on a couple of the par 5's too.....ah well! There's always next year lol

I can think of a few that make you work, but being able to hit a ball a good distance, the only toughness I find in golf holes is in my mind or in my consistancy. Chris's 469 par four is an example, I know I can hit 300 yds with a good drive and I know I can hit 170 with 8,7 or 6 irons depending on conditions, if it turns out I only get 260, I know I can hit the rest with a good 5 iron or 4 hybrid. I never find any holes tough or impossible, just challenging to my ability. If my game is on, there are no holes that I cannot make GIR (well I havent come across any yet), its all down to my game, how well Im playing, how accurate etc as opposed to the hole itself. Its only tough if you think its tough. ;)

I think the hardest hole on our course is the 2nd, par 4, 421 yards off the whites and SI 2.
Elevated tee, but you have trees and a bunker down the left hand side to catch the pulled or hooked tee shot, and on your right you have more trees, a ditch running almost the full length of the hole with the practice ground on the other side which is OOB. Not so bad on a flat calm day with a dampish fairway, but if you've got a left to right breeze and hard ground, anything pushed or sliced slightly will either end up in the ditch or will bounce over and go onto the practice area.
Normally it will be into the wind, and even a well struck drive will leave you a good mid iron or even a hybrid into the green, which slopes away from you, has a wicked downslope into bushes on the right and a big bomb hole with an overhanging tree short right to catch the sliced approach. Oh, plus a bunker there as well just in case you fat it! Bloody tough hole (although the yardage wouldn't make you think so) and a par up here feels like a birdie.
In my first medal there a couple of months ago I sliced my tee shot out of bounds but luckily made par with my 2nd ball courtesy of a terrific chip and putt. I felt as chuffed as anything walking off there with a 6!

Yeh I've played it 3 times (I think) and had par, par, birdie literally 'cos I ripped a drive up there all 3 times and was lucky to hit straight ones :) Hit and hope springs to mind :p

Can't think of a hard hole at Copthorne, they're all easy-peasy

Our 4th hole is a par 4 459 yards dog-legging right around a huge tree that is about 200 yards from the tee. There is deep deep rough to the right of the tree that if you go in you almost don't bother looking for your ball - if you find it you won't be able to do much with it. To be fair the short stuff is quite wide but go too far left and you're back in the deep stuff. End up just short of it and you've got in excess of 200 to go. The ground has always been firm when I've played it and the ball runs for England - you have to judge it well. Bunker short left and more rubbish over the back make it a hole that you're never really unhappy if you walk off with a bogey. Good job its SI 1!!

Probably our 6th Par 3 180 yds off whites--water down the right hand side--lake on the left to catch the wayeard hook shot. Ruins many a card.

The 6th on J O`Gaunt is a 472yd par 4, wind off the left. A dog leg right that narrows at 270yds. Ob right and trees left. If you are to far right you are blocked off by the trees on the corner. Get through the gap and you have 200yds to the green, bunkers right and left and the green is raised. A 5 is good.
The 13th is a 447yd par 4, wind usually into off the right. A stream runs from 7 o`clock to 1 o`clock at 220 yds out and catches any miss hit shot(and trolly). Cross the stream successfully and you then have a 180yd second to the green protected again by the stream and trees that are on the island that hide 2/3rds of the green.
The Cathagena course although shorter, is tighter. Holes 15, 16, and 17 are known as the Bermuda Triangle as your score can dissapear if you make any mistakes. They are only 376, 399 and 346yds long but they can bite.
Have a look on our web site, the pictures and yardage diagrams do the holes far more justice.

Don't forget the 16th 430yrd par 4 uphill with trees on the left just where you want to hit the ball, with the same sort of deep rough to the left. Although the fairway is wide and inviting you have to be close to the trees to stand any chance of getting on in 2 (IMurg does it all the time now) I've only managed it a couple of times. If you go right there is more rough but you can never reach the green in 2. No bunkers but the green is tricky with loads of contours to navigate. Did I mention it's all uphill! Must be why it's SI2.
