Top 5 courses played this year

Sunningdale Old
Sunningdale New
Woodhall Spa Hotchkin
St George's Hill
Hankley Common
  • Homourable mentions to Hindhead, High Post and Farnham
  • Farnham being the only new course
  • and infact, these 8 are the only courses apart from my home two that i have played this year
  • Most impressive i would say High Post - a lovely course and one of my favourtites - we played in Nov after a period of awful rain and it was in amazing condition and of course ended up in a currry house afterwards!

These are not 'top courses' but I think the question asked for my personal top five from 2023. Mine look positively downmarket compared to the exotic and expensive locations in most other lists. Nevertheless, here's my five: Seacroft, Matlock, Oakmere, Stoke Rochford, Market Rasen.
I had a lucky year in that the total cost to me for Ganton and North Berwick was £15, Mere was a discounted rate as they are part of the James Braid Ass, and my other 2 were in opens, max £20 each. All 5 of mine cost less than £100 in total, would be £400-500 if paid at advertised green rate. You need to get friendly with members at these courses 🤣 .

Probably the cheapest course I played was West Lothian, £15 in an Open. Probably my favourite golfing day of the year. Not anywhere near a top 100 list but if you offered me any of my 5 to play next season, that is the one I would choose.

I can’t really take part in threads like this with such a limited choice, but since its just my top 5 then;

Mont Choisy Le Golf
Heritage GC
Anahita GC
Ile Aux Cerfs
Avalon GC

Mine are:

Woburn - The Dukes
Hankley Common
Farnham
Frilford Heath - Red
Moor Park - High Course

Notable mentions to Huntercombe and Burnham Beeches too.
Moor Park is right on my doorstep and I've never played it. :LOL: Keep meaning to sort that out. I've done two club fittings there if that counts. 👀 Oh and my wedding reception (yawn).

Ranked in terms of my favs;

5 courses I played for the first time;
1. Swinley Forest
2. Rye
3. Broadstone
4. West Hill
5. Royal Ashdown Forest

Honourable mention: Remedy Oak and Ferndown

5 courses I played again;
1. Parkstone
2. Hindhead
3. Blackmoor
4. Hayling
5. Moor Park

Some very good lists so far. Some very privileged people here (me too).

My list in order of preference:
1. El Saler
2. Royal St Georges (controversial but I prefer the paella and beach views at El Saler)
3. Woodhall Spa Hotchkin
4. Worplesdon

Number 5 is a toss up between El Bosque, Seacroft and Hadley Wood.

La Manga West - just love that course.
Kingsbarns - needs no explanation
Roda - again, just love it, great layout and hugely fun
Renaissance - enjoyed it, expected slightly more though
Carnoustie Championsip - beast of a course

I have to say, I don't share the love for Roda. It's very flat, borders the motorway, and I found it rather bland. One of those courses where the holes are all standard templates and it's hard to remember any holes.

Not really travelled much for golf this year and not played any new courses. Top 5 would be :-

Hillside
Woodall Spa
Delamere
Fairhaven
Prestbury

IIRC I don’t think I’ve played anywhere other than my own club, Farnham, the Army and Hankley Common.

Hankley was splendid and I enjoyed The Army, but to be honest I’m fortunate to be able to play the lovely track that is my own every and any day of the week. And I played it a lot this year.

Not played many new away courses this year but here are some that I have.

South Shields - a very enjoyable course with a very welcoming clubhouse.

Panmure - absolutely first class.

Kings Inverness - enjoyable but a bit of a slog off the back tees.

Goswick - played a couple of times. Love it there, superb course.

North Berwick West - played in October. Pretty poor condition for a "top course". Some nice holes and great views, but very overrated for me.

I only played 8 away from my home, I'd guess the top 5 were

Moray Old
Royal Norwich
Toot Hill
The Warren
Moray New

only The Warren was new to me.
