Top 10 Municipal golf courses?

Duxbury Park used to be a muni but is now run privately by Glendale golf as a pay & play, if it counts i would nominate this. Very good track & well worth a visit.

This is where I got the golfing bug many years ago. When it is dry it is a super test of golf. When it is wet it is bloomin awful. The course is always open and gets overplayed in bad conditions which only makes it worse.

It's years since I played there, but I'm sure Meyrick Park in Bournemouth is a muni, and a quality track at that.

St Andrews must be the best muni.
Started at 2 in Dundee
Caird Park open parkland bit bland but well wrth the effort.
Camperdown built at the back of the main park has tight fairways and lots and lots of trees. Straight fairways and fantastic views out over the Firth of Tay. well worth a visit if just for the bunkers sand so soft a pleasure to play.
At present spend my time slogging arround Bradley Park in Huddersfield, has some tight fairways and some intresting short par 3's. Might get a bit boggy in the lower half but still a good course. Even if only for the Sat morn full breakfast buffet, well worth a visit.

What about Braid Hills No1 in Edinburgh (there used to be a No2 !) which can be seen Here

A fair test of golf at any time of the year. You need to be accurate off the tee and play good shots into tight greens.

I will second Braid Hills, some fantastic holes there, only let down by a 4 hole stretch out around the turn (if I remember correctly, it is ages since I played there). Great views of Edinburgh too.

I agree Tilgate Forest is a fine course. I have enjoyed Southport especially as the other 'gems' are so expensive; and my local Stevenage is a good lay out if a little slow.

Downshire in Wokingham was voted in the top 10 public golf courses a few years back (think it was by on e of the mags -maybe even GM)

Gets my vote - in great nick at the moment too...and very good value in the current climate.

Ian

Thorpe Wood gets my vote every time, good course in remarkable nick considering the amount of foot traffic it gets and with a good pro shop with supposedly very good custom fitting (not tried it myself but reports are good)

I think High Elms near Bromley was municipal, although may not be these days. Haven't played there for years, but I remember it having some great holes and always being open because of the good natural drainage.

It's still a muni - but although the layout is ok, the last time I was there (earlier this year) the greens were really poor. So few people had bothered to repair pitch marks that there were more craters than in Helmand province. Needs someone to take it in hand.

That's sad to hear. I might try to get down there soon to take a look.

There are loads of different courses here, so to broaden the thread out, what does a top 10 mnui need to have to put it above others

How about: -

- Access to tee times
- Cost
- Course layout
- Course condiction
- club facilities

******************************************************

Roundhay Golf club: -

- Access to tee times = booked via the phone or at the pro shop.
- Cost = £10.30 wd & £13.40 we
- Course layout = 9 holer of 2600 yards off whites set in mature park land with good challenging holes, ideal for older peeps and beginners.
- Course condiction = excellent, the greens are running true and the fairways are in mint condiction. Some bunkers would welcome some sand.
- club facilities = Well stocked pro shop and decent driving range. The clubhouse serves good butties and toasties but no kitchen for hot meals.

robin,

presumably that's aston? played it two or three times, funny I forgot I was a muni, seems more like a member's club as I got a discount when I played it with a mate.

not a bad course, can't make my mind up whether it was better before they swapped halves.

One I forget is a muni, Stevenage (aka Aston). Well maintained, enough to keep you honest, holes with room to hit, others that will kill you if you stray, and at reasonable fees.

Some strokesavers or other type of course maps, not just the back of a cig packet drawings that we have now.
The ability to turn up and get a slot in the mornig time table of Medal 3&4 balls.
Someone being a proper park keeper and keeping the game flowing and also shouting at slackers who do not repair pitch marks not only on the greens but in the middle of the fairway after skying 1 200 ft up in the air.
