To Buy Or Not to Buy?

Went for a Custom Fitting Session last week and came away with the spec and club that suited me best (Callaway FT9 11 degree loft draw bias and stiff Fujikara ZCom shaft) and have spent the last week tracking one down. Finally agreed a deal with Direct Golf in Cambridge at a good price (£229) plus a decent trade in on my FT5.

All set to seal the deal then picked up a copy of TG in the supermarket to see the rather attractive replacement for the FT9, the FT IS. Now if you were in my position what would you do, pick up the FT-9 at a reduced price now or wait for to try the newer model to see if it is even better?

PS Anyone heard on a release date or price on the FT-IS?

Is the FT9 likely to get even cheaper once the new model comes out ?

Not sure, having had an FT-5 before this it would appear that the Callaway FT models hold their price pretty well. Certainly the FT-5 and even the FT-3 sell for more than many of last year's releases from other companies and the FT-5 still costs more than the Diablo at some places.

You've been custom fitted for the old version, and so you should stick with that. The new version could very well have different characteristics that would not suit you. I agree with CrapHacker re waiting a short while to see if the price of the old model comes down when the new one is launched. The contra to that is that you can't wait too long or the ideal club you have found may be sold. Good luck whatever you do.

If you havent sold your FT-5 yet maybe you should just use that. In my opinion they are very simalar to one another apart from 1 or 2 yards.

Personally I'd wait and have a go with the new version. You'll know soon enough if its for you and I'm sure you'll source another FT9 if you need to

That was what came out from the custom fit session, the FT-5 was the second best driver for me with an average carry of 188 yards, OK figures for launch angle and backspin and a dispersion of 23 yards. Compare this to the ideal spec FT-9 which averaged 208 yards of carry, slightly higher launch angle and slightly less backspin (which the fitter agreed in advance what I should look for) and a dispersion of only 9 yards. I suppose the nagging feeling is that if the FT-9 can show these improvements, perhaps the FT-IS can go even better.
