Well after the last thread on tips on buying a used scotty tonight I hit the range open minded with no brand preffered, just a better feel. I started at the £30 end of the bargain stuff right through the current ping, rossa's that they had, rife, odyssey and scotty range. I didn't consider yes as I have one already.

The bargain section was quickly dismissed, they all felt heavy and unbalanced and length consistency was up and down.

Onto ping and although a couple were nice to look at and a bargain at £79.00 when stood over the ball they all looked very long - ping out!

Odyssey, now this I was shocked at. The blade style like the ping felt very long and this seemed the same as two rossa's I had tried so the blade odyssey range was out and the mallet or half mallet style just didn't feel right. They seem to have a non simetric shape that looked like they had been made wrong.  I know a mid capper hacker has no. Idea on how to make a putter but they looked miss shaped.

Ok no we have narrowed it, a rossa monte Carlo which was centre shafted half mallet or the scotty range. Now my range has just been purchased by AG so I acknowledge that their scotty range was limited but I tried them all including 2 in the used bin for £100 each.

Select new port - didn't like the look when above the ball, like the other blades I felt they looked too long and felt a tad toe heavy
Studio - not bad and better balanced than the Newport but again it looked long, at this point I ruled out bladed putters. With this I didn't try the Newport two but it was down to final two. Newport f-back 2 new or f-back 1 used. Although the f-back 2 is the newer model with 10g weights it felt heavier than the f-back 1 with 15g weights. The older f- back one gave a nice feel so it was this in my final 2

So it's short listed rossa monte Carlo 7 for £69 new or scotty f-back 1 used for £100.  At this point the ego kicks in and I'm thinking it has to be the scotty, but after 20 to 30 putts with both items consistency wins and the wallet took a breath of relief as I walked out with a nice shiney new rossa montecarlo 7 at a haggled price of £60

Just shows that you can go out with the intention of buying " the worlds best putter " but if if don't feel right a £60 sale item can leave a massive smile on your face and £140 in the pot for my next course of 8 lessons.

Sounds like you did your homework and got a good value choice there. When is it's first outing to see if it behaves on the course?

It is amazing that people will spend £200 on a Scotty because they get swayed by the brand when there is plenty of choice out there. FWIW i got mine for £65 but I knew my stroke suits a heel/toe putter and I wanted to see if I got better feel from a Scotty than the Odyssey I had. Conclusion is 'yes' but i still wouldn't have spent £200 on a new un.

i just went open minded to try everything, ive had 2 personal best rounds this year with my weak point being putting, the last two rounds ive left atleast 5 putts wasted from a silly length and enough was enough.

I would have purcahsed a bobs bargin bucket putter if it felt right,

£200 on a club that hits nearly 1/2 of all the shots you play and definitely more than a 1/3, yet people will willingly pay more than that for a driver which can be used a maximum of 14 times a round and usually far less.

Have no problem having paid £200 for my Scotty (well the insurance company did  )and if i could find a putter Id like more Id happily pay more for this than any other club in the bag

I seriously wouldn't buy a scotty, for me I'll always go for the Ping. Rightly or wrongly I see scotties like many other Ping copiers out there, yes they all say the take more time and care, use better materials etc than Ping but in the end they are still just copies of Ping designs.
Sadly for me scotty is just riding on the back of Pings success without adding anything of value. How successfull are his own designs? the one's I've seen are ghastly.
Sorry scotty fans but them's my feelings.

I assume you drive a Ford as anything else is just a copy?

To me it doesnt matter what the brand is on the putter, its whatever gets it in the hole in the fewest number of shots, refusing to even consider a brand because you see it as a copy is surely just spiting yourself
