Not a great ipper in restaurants although do not mind if service food is good.

However I have managed to get Business Class travel from Dubai to Manchester because I had travelled with Emirates before. This is great but included is a chaueffer driven car to home which is almost 100 miles away.

Obviously the drive will be looking for a few squid and I was thinking of £10 maybe £20.

What are you views on tipping and what would you give the driver?

10% minimum, if the food or service has been good, 15% or more if you are really happy.

A word of caution, make sure you know your exchange rates. On a trip to Iceland me and HID had been out on a jeep safari, up glaciers, black beach, tour of the island etc... when we got back and HID was paying she gave the driver a tip, his face was a picture and he asked if she was sure, HID said yes and off he went.

I asked why he looked surprised, she didn't know as she'd only given him a 500 krona tip, with exchange rates HID thought she had given him a £5 tip, where as in reality she had given him £50, d'oh

I always work on 5% for ok service ans 10-15% for good to great service.

I was on holiday in Cyprus this year and even give a 20% tip at a really nice restaurant (fairly small bill as only me, wife and daughter). Their service was phenomenal. They had the perfect balance of being helpful, manors and not bothering you any more than what was neeeded. but best of all was their attitude towards my daughter. They were very playful with her and even let her go to the ice cream bar and make her own concoction of flavours (with a little help) it made her night

That's actually a toughie! But purely given the considerable distance involved!

From your point of view, £20 might seem quite a bit but from his/hers, that would actually be a pretty dire day's takings - 4-5 hours for only £20 on top! He/She would expect to make considerably more than that on the short journeys in/near Manchester.

Try working out how much it would cost you to get from Manchester to your home, then give 25-50% of that - dependent on your satisfaction with the service of course. That way, you've saved plenty and the driver hasn't 'suffered' from the fact that almost 200 miles and most of the day was devoted to a single customer. I'd expect £40 might be nearer the mark for that journey! If that makes you baulk, you could always try to negotiate a slightly different deal with Emirates - simply pointing out the distance as a consideration. Neither of you should feel hard done by or 'out of pocket' by the circumstances.

I've a bit of experience with tipping - I'll give anything from zero (even crossing out any auto-added amount) the standard amount specified/expected or more according to my assessment of the service provided. Hasn't been for those circumstances though. Many Brits seem to hide/ be embarrassed by either the fact or the mount of tip they give. And you could always query the driver on what a normal or good tip was for that journey and base your tip on the response (and your assessment of it).

Oh. And have a great trip - you lucky B.

Had a similar experience some years ago in Kenya with the driver who had taken us on a three day safari. Prior to retirement I was in the world of finance but that didn't stop me making a b***s up of the exchange rate. When I checked with someone at the hotel it turned out I had given the guy the equivalent of two months wages.
No wonder he looked happy!

From those 2 options? - £20

In terms of tipping, I think people should get tips for EXCELLENCE and not just for doing their job, or in some cases... a poor job.

This is MY View too
Too many times in past we have just tipped regardless (normally 10% being norm) for meals out, but outlook has changed now, as Im sick and tired of paying for C R A P or very average service
Think we have all been in restaurants when u have waiters/waitresses standing chatting to each other, and u cant get their attention, u have to ask Them to get u a Drink, after NOT being asked if u want anymore............!!

I aint tight, Not by any means
But if I didnt get good service, I aint leaving too much on the table afterwards

As this is a freebie and no monetary value involved so you won't be giving him cash, why not just grab your bags and run :o

However, £20 would be a nice gesture but I wouldn't do it as matter of course... We're in a recession you know and charity begins at home!

I'm glad I'm not the only one! I only tip if someone has gone above and beyond. The wife hates it and always wants to. My view is they are doing their job and get a wage etc harsh maybe but no one gave me tips at work for getting the stuff delivered on time! When I've been abroad to some impoverish places I have, we went to Kenya for our honeymoon and tipped the pool guy the equivilant of a tenner and he always had the sun beds and towels out and always looked after us. It was something like a weeks wage for him. In the end I had to just say if I need anything I see you!

Depends on the country, in the US you tip for service regardless, how good or bad would determine the amount but for good service there 20% is EXPECTED, they have a tip culture and it is majorly frowned upon if you tip nothing, if you feel service out there was bad you should be complaining.

As for your cab ride, I'd think £20 would be spot on.

Not a big tipper unless exceptional service is provided. If we're having a meal with a large group, banter and timing factors in to this! Never tip a bar person, it's their job to pull a pint

thanks for the replies guys, really helpful. Difficult to work out what they are earning but would expect not much more than minimum wage.

Will probably give him £20 as it is a round trip of 3.5 hours which would mean almost £6 per hour more and will be tax free.
