So as not to get too embroiled in the 3 minute search thread, l thought I'd ask separately...

I used to have a timer - a golf-specific timer - for timing a 5 minute search. (Yes, I fall into that category, but l am contractually obliged to say that other methods of measuring, estimating, or even guessing the passage of time are available). Nonetheless, l had one and it was useful. To me.

Twas a simple thing - basically a small digital clock which I hung on my bag. One press of a button started a 5 minute countdown. It beeped after 4 mins and again at 5. It then reverted to being a clock until next time. Image below (if l've managed to post the image properly). I broke it and obviously, as the rule was going to change to 3 mins, l didn't set about replacing it straight away.

I've looked but can't seem find anything similar which does three minutes - anyone know if such a golf-specific item still exists (and where)? Effectively, so far l've only found kitchen timers, or stop watches, which won't really do - although they would indeed do the job. Bizarrely, the 5 minute version seems to be still available.

You said that a kitchen timer isn't really suitable, but I can tell you that the Culinare one (£5 at Amazon) might do the job. Once you set the time, it keeps it set unless you explicitly reset it.

I bought one off ebay, sits on the control panel of my trolley, go to search, hit the timer button, scary how quick 3 minutes goes by.

Interesting, amusing and worrying...

I accept the point, but would expect the timer to be shoved somewhere painful if I waved it in front of some of the folk I play with while looking for their ball!

My Skycaddie watch has digital clock on it. I have a quick look and a polite "that's about time" usually helps... I bet the 3 mins was brought in to reduce the 7 or 8 minute (aka roughly 5 mins!! :-) )

There are times when ne thinks
" I wish I had not thrown that away"

A sand filled egg timer would fit the bill precisely.
