Hi all,

I have a corporate golf day at Tilgate Forrest in Crawley Surrey and would like any info I can get on it. Has anyone played it? Is anyone a member of it? All I have been told is “you don’t need a driver” but I don’t go anywhere without one. Any and all info very welcome.

Thanks alot

Al

this time of year a driver can be used, lots off little undulations in the fairways especially ther 18th, pretty tight and tree lined. I like the place. Its cut out in a pin forest so not alot of room between fairways and tree's.. good course.

It was my local club as a junior - my parents still live 15 minutes away!

The driving range is good, lots of decent facilities and a nice practice green. For a council-run facility it is well looked after.

That said, it's quite tough. Tonnes of trees everywhere (clue is in the title I suppose) and very narrow fairways.

If you get the chance, play the par 3 nine-hole beforehand which is in much worse condition, but prepares you for some narrow shots!

By the way I can see why some might say you don't need a driver. You can use one no problems, but if you're not accurate off the tee you're much better off going for a 5wd or 3wd otherwise you'll just spend your time foraging for lost balls!

Its a Council run golf course, but I must say it isn't a bad set up. There are a few holes you can get the big dog out including the first. There are some tight holes and a couple of dog legs if my memory is right.

There's a reasonably big size golf shop that sells all you need and a good driving range. The bar/restaurant is upstairs but the last time i played there I didn't go in as i was in a hurry.

Overall not a bad course and will ask a few questions. Oh when driving there you drive through an estate, the golf club is at the end of the drive. Not far from where Crawley Town football club play, just off the M23.

Great stuff guys, thanks alot. I think its 9 holes team comp of the par 3 course in the morning then 18 on the main course in the afternoon.

I am not too wayward with the driver and would really like the longest drive of the day so I will use the big dog where I can but I hope to have my GM/AG supplied 910F 3 wood by then so I should be covered all round :D

Cracking Course - Has dried out nicely.

Wont waste your time on Par 3 - although its very tight most of the holes are <100 yrds, more of a pitch and putt - Good for practive but maybe not suited for a society.

Make sure you bring enough balls - the woodland isnt forgiving!

PLayed it loads of times. Not a bad course at all for a Muni, although James (JustOne) hates it with a passion.
First hole not a bad par 4 to start, favours a slightly drawn tee shot but as long as you don't hit a massive block right you'll be ok.
2nd is a really nice short par 4 with a stream that meanders all the way down and crossed it a couple of times.
3rd fairly boring par 3.
4th is a nice par 5 (it's a par 4 off the whites!). You can go with the big dog on this one, which could give you a chance to have a go at it in two. But there is a stream about 80 yards short of the green which you can't see unless you are over the path that goes across the hole.
5th is a tricky litte par 3 that is surrounded by bunkers.
6th is a good par 4. Dont pull one here 'cos all the fairway goes down to the left and you'll be in the trees.
7th is a "so so" par 4. Favour the right hand side of the fairway.
8th is another par 5. A big drive (if the ground is firm) will find the stream that goes across the middle of the fairway. Your second shot will always be off a hanging lie so aim up the left 'cos it will go right! This is the hole where a couple of little gits on pushbikes ran out and nicked my ball after playing my 2nd shot so make sure there aren't any kids sitting in the trees up the left 'cos that's what they are waiting to do.
9th is a cracking par 4. A lake in front of you, but it won't bother you unless you've got a dose of the tops. Big drive over the top of the hill and a great shot in (favour the left of the flag cos the greens slopes left to right).
10th hole is a bugger. Par 4 up a rising fairway and slight dogleg left to a nice green. Play safe off the tee. It's tight. Hyrbid or 5 wood will do.
11th is a decent par 3 with a big green. Always plays a bit longer than it looks.
12th is a bastard par 5. Double dog leg (right then left). Play for position off the tee with a 5 wood and don't be tempted to take on too much with your second shot. Just knock a 4 or 5 iron down the middle. It's all about position that hole.
13th is a severe dog leg right. Just knock something up to the corner. Don't take the trees on. They are further away than they look.
14th is another dog leg right where a 3 wood hit over the top of the trees and fading is the ideal shot. A big drive over the top and straight will see you running through the fairway.
15th is a reasonable par 3. About a 7 or 8 iron. Bunkers each side and at the back if memory serves me correctly.
16th is a dog leg left, just bang a 3 wood down the middle.
17th is a tough driving hole. Avenue of trees all the way down. Par 5 dogleg right. A driver (if you've been driving well) or a 3 wood should put you in good position. A very undulating fairway and a tough green to putt on.
18th is a great hole, probably my favourite on the course. Don't block right, you'll be reloading. Big drive down right of centre will bound back in to the middle and you'll see the green sitting below you. It's a lovely approach shot.
I like Tilgate. Get it in the best condition and you won't play many better muni's. But it aint' easy
;)
