Rory is not English, Scottish(I wish) or Welsh ....he is from Northern Ireland ..and tonight I celebrate as an Irishman!!

Too early ... no way!

he is a golfing god and I claim him on behalf of all us Brits :D :D

To be fair I do support all the Brits not just the English guys so dont go excluding the rest of us :p :p

Coming from Belfast, theres a chance of some Scottish ancestry.A Brit winning is an excuse to drink a couple of beers,a Scotsman winning is an excuse to drink a couple of large malts.lol

Agreed

Why did nobody call Louis a golfing god after the Open last year?

Don't get me wrong a great performance but come on.

Bobby Jones was younger
Tiger won by more shots

Rory was more under par than ever before? So was the rest of the field.

There were more sub par rounds this year than ever before and on sunday there was roughly double the previous number of rounds under par on the final day than ever before.

Harrington actually said that Rory will beat Jack's 18 Majors. I think people might be getting a bit ahead of themselves.

He did swing it really well, got a couple of lucky breaks on the way and putted very well. He has been groomed for this for a long, long time. I heard that IMG actually paid his dad to stop working and take Rory everywhere for golf events from age 10, so it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that when he stripes the ball for 4 days he will generally be very hard to beat, but beatable in my opinion.

Swinger, Totally agree, Talk about OTT, Ok he won his First Major,Good for him, But to compare him to Tiger or any of the Golfs Greats was ridiculous,Lets just wait and see where Rory goes from here, Onwards and upwards, hopefully!!

Yep! Have to agree with you both ... he is just golfing sh*t!!

NOT!!

Go and have a wee lie down, maybe you were up too late last night or the England football result soured you, to appreciate what this young lad did but I believe it is the start of something really big .. a wee bit like a Seve coming on the scene but a Seve that can hit a few more fairways on the way round!

I don't think it's OTT.

The guys that are touting him as the next Tiger and "the one to beat" are the same guys who play with him week in and week out and also the same guys who have played alongside Tiger.

Oh and they are Professional golfers, so I'd like to think they know a thing or two about how good he is and how much he can (and will) dominate this game.

As G-Mac said last night, he's been groomed to be a Superstar and he will revel in it. It took something VERY special to come back from his Meltdown at Augusta to perform the way he did this weekend.

Everyone (except me ;)) wrote him off until at least next season saying Augusta has mentally destroyed him and that "he doesn't have the same mental strength and winning attitude as Tiger did".

He's just won the US Open, two months later by 8 clear shots. That's not something your average tour pro would ever be able to achieve.

Seve never got a lucky as Rory did.

I'm neither one extreme or the other on this.

Very good performance from McIlroy, to win by such a margin is hugely impressive and he should rightly take all the praise coming his way.

but............

Louis Oosthuizen won by 7 at St Andrews, never looked like missing a beat and it was met with a bit of a muted response really. Every bit as impressive a performance as McIlroy in my eyes.

Reading an article in either GM or a.n.other mag he didn't have agents at the age of 10 or anything either.

I've only recently learned the extent McIlroy has been "groomed" for pro golf and from what I've read nobody around him should be surprised. With his talent plus all the attention paid to his game he had everything to put him in this position.

Not belittling his achievement in the slightest, just a little bit of context.....

Well he has the game .. proven
He has the mental strenght . now proven ..
He is a decent guy all proven ..
Golfing God .. NOT YET proven .. has everything to be one yes i agree & i would love to see him break every record that there is to break & win all round him .. Padraig won 3 majors in 2 years , no mention of golfing god .. NO ONE on here doubts his ability & every1 wishes him well . but to be set up on a pedasil (spellcheck please) so early can only set him up to be shot down .. not a criticism in any way ,, i hope he will be the golfing god he can be but lets just wait ans see ... yeah /no ??

I think it's important to see Rory as Rory and not compare him to anyone. People get too excited to pin labels on talented players. Rory's the new Jack, Matteo's the new Seve, Jason Day's the new Greg Norman etc. etc.

He has fantastic pedigree 3rd USPGA, 3rd Open, led The Masters for 3.5 rounds before his meltdown on 10 and destroyed the field at the US Open. The lad has the potential for greatness BUT

talk of him overhauling Jack's record and surplanting Tiger is premature.

Let's not forget Jason Day finished 2nd in both the last two Majors and is only 23...

As Jason Sobel (writer on the golf channel) said on twitter, he can achieve the bland slam this year! Is second not first loser in their eyes anyway?

The 8 shots thing is impressive but it was the lowest scoring US Open in history and not just because of Rory.

Coming back after melting down is impressive??
I guess so but it's what these guys are trained to do, take the ups with the downs. What is more impressive is the position he put himself in at the Masters, personally I think he got a hell of a lot of confidence from that.
To be honest everyone was saying how well he took it from interviews after so not sure about the shock now apart from it's another excuse to get carried away with our new Golfing God!

Pro golfer also hardly ever say anything bad about another, in fact the opposite is always true. They do their bit for the media, the media come out with questions about Rory because they love getting all in a frenzy and they say very (very) nice things about him. They said extremely good things about Louis but nobody cares about that because he has a silly name, comes from some place thousands of miles away and plays ping. It would seem that you guys don't remember him either.
Its it a no lose situation for golf though so in that respect the media craze followed by public craze is great but you won't see me walking around in Rory underpants.

I'm firmly off this band wagon guys but enjoy your party.

Rory the Golfing god will not be saving me.

Lets not have this "Tiger Who" thing, the man is a great golfer who has moved our sport forward and given us much pleasure in the past.

If someone else gets good that does not take away what Tiger has done.

Knee jerk reaction to call him a god. Like him or not, Tiger was in the mix in practically every tournament he entered, especially the majors, before everything came to light.

Using that as a measure, with his current majors streak, Jason Day is as much a golfing god!!??

Unbelievably good performance - yes.
Golfing god - Long way from that yet.

That is "only" his third win @ aged 22. Manasero has already had 2 wins aged 18.

Both are immensly impressive, but golf gods?? Not yet surely

Not knocking the performance or the achievement etc but also get the feeling that Rory is the right person at the right time.

Tiger has a tarnished image and is injured, maybe never to return or never to return at his previous level. The European and American Tours, the media, the golfing press, the advertisers and the PR people are desperate for a name to fill that gap, to keep the crowds and dollars rolling in. Up steps a young, charismatic irish lad (and do not forget that being irish plays very well to the American audience) and you suddenly have what everyone is looking for.

Call me cynical but there are many people in and around golf who needed a new figurehead to replace Tiger and inspire the punters and it looks like Rory is it whether he wants it or not.

This was undoubtedly a fantastic result and will go down as one of the greatest performances in US Open history but let's not forget that apart from this, Rory only has 2 other wins in his 3 years 9 months as a pro. Compare that to 18 wins for Tiger in the same period! Hopefully the confidence that this week has given him will help him put that right but to compare him to Tiger already is a wee bit premature.
