Tiger Who?? Past History!!

Rory is not a golfing great yet. For sure it's an impressive result and he's shown potential to go low in the past but he's not a golfing god yet and it's not fair to say "Tiger who??".

I think some people have focused too much on recent years and forgotten just how great Tiger Woods was from 1997 through to 2009.

I hope Rory can have a career to match or better Tiger's, he's certainly making a good start to it.

he is a golfing god and I claim him on behalf of all us Brits :D :D

To be fair I do support all the Brits not just the English guys so dont go excluding the rest of us :p :p
Northern Ireland is not in Britain

Yea but it's part of the United Kingdom and it's "Great Britain and Northern Ireland", so it counts!

That opens up a whole other topic that I don't think anybody wants to get into. But it is my opinion that his home country Northern "Ireland" which makes him Irish

I totally agree with this it was only a few month back he was a laughing stock for bottling it at the Masters. I applaud him for coming back in magnificent style, he was amazing but one major does not a Tiger make. Wake me up when he has another ten.

Ok so I am from Belfast, which is in Northern Ireland, which is part of the Island of Ireland, but it is also part of the British Isles and the United Kingdom.
It's time we all got over it, label me whichever way you like. Irish, British or Ulsterman. It really doesn't matter, particularly to Rory who is part of a new generation of kids from here brought up in happier peaceful times. Let's not drag them down with the same old arguements from the past.

Could not agree more mate!

I'm not trying to drag anyone down but it is a typical english thing that if anyone that can be claimed as British does well they are "British" but if they fail (Rory at the Masters, Andy Murray) they go back to being called Irish Scottish or Whatever. It suits people to be British whenever they want

Yea, it's a shame really. They're all british to me, win or lose.

It's just that this is not the first thread that ends up going down the Irish/British route. I honestly don't see the relevence in Golf. The most important team event is the Ryder cup and we are more than Happy to Claim Seve, Sergio, Berhard and Martin as our own. So if some English/Welsh or even Spanish want to claim Rory well fair play to them.

In golf, really the whole "european" Umbrella is applicable as far as I'm concerned.

Of course, I'd love it to be one of our own (from the UK) to win over a Spaniard or Frenchman, but I'd be happy with any European winning a PGA Tour/Major event.

Well that's fair enough, but it just Pisses me off when people can be so fickle and not just support their favourites

Rory played fantastic golf for the whole four days and after the 3rd day it was just a formality , as good as it was i couldn't watch it ,i kept up to date with it but had no interest to sit there all night waiting for the eighteenth hole .It would have been far more interesting if it was really nip and tuck between a few players .
Beware of bigging him up too much ,I can imagine everyone moaning in a few years time , the cameras always on Rory , what about the others etc etc .
All the gripes we have about Tiger this Tiger that . It could be Rory in future , but perhaps thats ok he's not American :D

I keep getting confused when you post as you've got my avatar! ;)

northern ireland isnt part of britain but who cares, glad that rory won but dont really have any connection with ireland so not really that bothered, but it good to see one of OUR ryder cup team bring any trophy back across the pond

I have to admit I was nervous for him starting out last night and hoped Augusta wouldn't come back to haunt him. It only took 3 shots to dispell any doubts I had. A majestic march to the title and confirmation that he is now a world class golfer. As for being the next Tiger, beating Jacks records and all that other crap lets hold on a second. Golfers like Woods don't come around that often and while I'll be the first to say this isn't the last major on McIlroys CV, getting to 18 is still a lon way away.

Lets celebrate with unity the stunning success of this young talent who seems to be the epitomy of a great champion, talented, humble and grounded and see where the future journey takes us as fans. Maybe we can have another debate in five years time as he matures fully and see where McIlroy is in the pantheon of the game

Its a fact that Rory's performance was one of the best in a major and probably the best ball striking and driving I have ever seen. I include all the top names. If Rory can do that for 10 years, then we can talk about him in the same bracket as Tiger.

He has the ability, but needs to be winning in all sorts of conditions, events and make those 80s he is prone to becoming the par rounds that Tiger regularly does/did.

Yes, there is a massive excitement, but as previous posters have put, Louis didn't get the same attention, purely because he is from a different hemisphere. Notice how Louis's golf hasn't been the same. Many suffer from the demands of being a Major winner and all the attention it brings....can Rory handle it like Tiger does?
