I have to say I disagree with the majority on here. If he has/had some news get it out now. Then the Open takes over as most people start practicing from tomorrow and the build up starts and the news can be digested and then focus switched to the main event. I think it makes sense and to be fair to Nike, TW Enterprises Inc Plc and uncle tom cobbly and all of course they want their little beat of exposure. It's no different to brand Beckham telling the world every minute event (surprised we weren't given access to his daughters conception), loudmouth Haye self publicising before crashing to earth or Lewis Hamilton whingeing and complaining in the build up to Silverstone. It is a media driven environment these days. Get use to it. Woods is still a big draw and if he has something to say (or not as it appears) then of course it will be big news.
