Thunder and Lightning

Hi Louise!

As junior I'm always worried about this happening as well.

My course is quite spread out, so when I'm at the furthest away point from the clubhouse it is a good 15 minute walk back.

I think you get back in as quick as possible if there is lightning, as of the metal shafts and trees ect.

My problem is my trolley (electric) only has 9 speeds so i can't run back in!!!

Stay out playing until the klaxon goes...and then hang around in shelter if it can be found until the klaxon goes and play can be resumed!

Get in the clubhouse fast and if really in dire straits I've read that getting into a bunker and curling up works...

A chap was killed by lightening on a course near me not to long ago. Newbury and Crookham. (Rooter might know more about this?) Its often not taken seriously enough but it seriously should be! Get out of dodge and quick! :(
I think I'm right in saying The Goose ( Retief) was hit by lightening when he was younger but cant recall if he was on a course at the time... Very lucky boy!

Really?! No idea, will find out. Am playing on Sunday.

Let's hope it doesn't Thunder and Lightning........

I got caught out in a storm last year.
It had been raining steadily, not too hard and I was on our 13th tee - about the highest part of the course, surrounded by trees!!
Perfect!

All Hell was breaking loose all arond and I didn't feel happy running for the Clubhouse - best part of half a mile away - and the rain was pelting down by now.

I just hunkered down and waited for it to pass - I must admit to feeling a tad nervous!

Separate yourself from your clubs and umbrella sharpish.
Find a low spot nearby, hollow or deep bunker and stay there until it is over.

PS Best to avoid metal spikes.
NEVER shelter under a tree.
Thunder is OK, it is the lightening you watch out for.

I hadn't been playing long when a huge storm came over. I love storms and found it quite exciting but when I got in the pro went nuts at me for being so stupid (politely!). When I got home I googled it and realised what an idiot I'd been and from then on have scarpered for safety at the sign of thunder and lightning.

I might have problems if I got struck as I'd possibly have molten colbolt and titanium inside my legs!

However, running back to the clubhouse isn't my favourite idea!

Under a tree is one of the worst places to be, although Iam not sure about under a group of trees?

The reason I asked was that it started while I was out this afternoon, it seemed to be missing the course but when it started thundering close by, we hightailed it back to the clubhouse.

make sure any shelter has a lightning protector installed - else avoid. A number of people killed last year (Germany) when they took shelter in what they believed to be protected shelter.
