Thunder and Lightning

Separate yourself from your clubs and umbrella sharpish.
Find a low spot nearby, hollow or deep bunker and stay there until it is over.

PS Best to avoid metal spikes.
NEVER shelter under a tree.
Thunder is OK, it is the lightening you watch out for.

You can't have thunder without lightning, you might not see it, but if you hear thunder lightning is there

I live in Newbury and it was shocking news at the time. I played in a Comp at the weekend at Newbury Racecourse and there were several Newbury & Crookham members playing. It started to thunder although there was no rain and we were klaxoned off the course, whilst we were waiting to go back out this was mentioned by a few of the Crookham members which quietened the "why did we stop" brigade.

I bet it did, no idea that even happened and I live 1/2 mile from n&c and am now a member there!

Where do you play gUr? Racecourse member? I actually like the course there, it gets some stick from the snobs, but I think it's awesome for the price! (Well free for me as a n&c member!)

Hi Rooter, yes I'm a Racecourse member, although not for much longer. I like the course as it is now, not so sure what it's going to be like as a 9 hole track, part of the reason for leaving. I actually live just off Bury's Bank Road so about 400 yards from N&C, and when my numbers come up membership will be my first investment, love your course hoping to play it tomorrow if I can.

Our clubhouse is 2 story and on the course at it'd highest point its easily 2.5 times taller than the clubhouse..... I have been caught in the middle of one last year that was very hairy... Scared the beejeezuz out of me..... At its furthest point fro the club house is out 13th and 15th greens which are down the back of the course and a good 15 minutes from the clubhouse across the hills... Its bum clenching yards on the way back if your caught in a storm.....

I would normally bite your hand off, unfortunately I will be in Kent at a roller skating comp on Sunday, but I will definitely take you up on any other offer. I live just off Greyberry Copse Road, Yes in Pidgeons Farm please don't judge me lol

Lol worry not, my friends mum lives down there, I am long term local and no snob! anyway, best let this thread get back to thunder! And not ask questions about roller skating.... I assume one of your kids?! Actually, a mate was seeing a girl that was into roller skating big time! I was amazed it still happened these days! Thought it would be all hover boards etc...

Easy answer is use a 1 iron, not even god can hit one of those!

Seriously though, if you are caught out there and it's to far or, in some cases, too dangerous to head for the club house then get as low as possible and if you are going to shelter under trees find the shortest trees around. Don't shelter under a small clump or single tree, you may as well carry on playing, the risk is about the same. A clubhouse can be hit just as easily as a tree, the safest place is in a car not touching anything metal due to the Faraday cage effect.
Get low, stay low and make sure the storm is well clear of you before you start playing again.

Played at Epsom last week. No sign of any thunder and lightening but hosing it down so sought shelter in some bushes and trees. Not perfect but keeping the majority of. Suddenly saw a flash and an instant crack. Out of there lively and left the clubs in there. Miles from the clubhouse so just squatted down low and waited for the rain to stop. Being up on the downs we cold see the good weather coming, just a question of waiting.

My club did have a hooter the pro sounded (one we use to start shotgun comps) but can't recall it being used in a while. Not sure if the pro just doesn't bother, hasn't noticed there is lightening around or been instructed not to bother. I have to be honest and say I'd rather squat low ideally in a low piece of ground and wait rather than walk in

I was once in a clubhouse that was hit by lightning. Lights came on of their own accord for a few seconds, fruit machines likewise and one of the kitchen staff got a (un)healthy belt off the tap they were using at the time. That was all the convincing I needed that I did not want to be outside and taking it on in person.

If you are out on the course and its starts thundering what do you do?

Having been slightly singed, along with 7 other golfer, in the late 80's I run for the clubhouse at the first rumble. A split second feeling of your hair standing up, then BANG!! Yes, I had hair back then. 8 golfers laid on their backs like dying flies... it scares the.... out of you.

Yes it certainly does scare the .... Out of you, on the 10th tee on Moray old 10 years ago I will never forget the storm that came over, I don't think I have ever been so nervous about been stood over a mile from the clubhouse. Even if most clubs did have klaxons you couldn't hear them from a lot of places on the golf course, I have played in several matches over the years that have sailed way to close for comfort. It's a call that clubs and whoever is in charge should be making a lot sooner than they do, we have invested in a lightning detector and this year it has been worth it's cost, it gives readings from 1 mile up to 30 miles away and it's just an amazing bit of kit.

I had a similar experience when lightning struck our office last year. It scared the living daylights out of me.

Stay out playing until the klaxon goes...and then hang around in shelter if it can be found until the klaxon goes and play can be resumed!

You are joking right? Not every club has a system in place where a warning is sounds.

If there is a risk of lightning get into a shelter if they are available. Failing that get back to the club house or your car. Never play on unless you fancy taking the chance to survive and pick up a pretty funky looking scar.
