As an ex hurler who took free pucks it was a pre shot routine i used when taking frees

Is this meant to make sense

The irish lads will know what i mean. Hurling is the fastest team field sport played by 2 teams of 15 pitch approx 150ydsX100yds. Players use a wooden hurler 34-36 inches long strike a leather ball.

Have a look at youtube hurling and you will get a flavour of the game--its tough, hard and uncompromising--greatest game bar none.

I always do it, unless of course the day is calm and there is little to no wind- but on my hill top course this is pretty rare. I understand that when on a tree lined hole etc the wind at ground level is going to be very different to up in the air, but it always gives you a good indication of the direction. I don't think on a long par 4 etc you can use the flag (if you can see it) as the wind is often very different on the tee to on the green, especially when there is a large elevation change.

I think it was haplesshacker that said about it becoming part of peoples pre shot routines, even though they don't watch the results- this is a great point. I know for a fact I have seen Tiger do this, and the same with some of my playing partners. As for his comment of 'seeing' the wind, I'll leave that to his imagination
