Throwing grass to check the wind

why on earth would you not want to check the direction of the wind ...
No no, I'm not saying I don't check the wind direction. I do...by standing there and feeling it blow over me, watching the flag, watching the trees, watching the clouds, watching other player's shots.

Ok , so I throw up some grass , see which way it goes and job done. Youre standing there feeling the wind blowing through your hair and holding up a wet finger like Ray Mears , come on youre having a laugh.. :D

i want to get a smuch information as possible. so check the clouds, check the trees and throw some grass up, then make a decision.

can see what you mean though, some people seem to jst pull grass up and not even look or think, habit more than anything i think

I think throwing the grass up does become a habit, for me it is usually done as a reaffirmation of the wind direction after I have taken all the other info in€. I find I only really notice it when it doesn't go where I expect it to.

very good point Freddie

Its something I have done in the past and may do in the future, but once or twice in 30 yrs isnt going to destroy any course :D I would only do this if there was confusion in my mind regarding wind direction, something that rarely happens to me.

Less is more in golf, the more things you add to your game the less attention you give to it ;)

I stopped doing this when I threw some grass in the air and cricked my neck as I watched it fly past me at break speed.
I tend to just go on feel and flag/trees now.

Are you smoking funny fags????
;)

Drinking the wine, eating the cheese and taking in the rays

I throw it up.
If i'm playing with someone I don't like, I normally throw it in such a way that will blow in their eyes.
 ;)

Although not pointless throwing grass in the air. There is really little need. Especially as we can surely feel where the wind is comming from, we can see how the trees are being effected if there are any & we can usually see how the wind is blowing the flag. All clues surely. But if its a routean that settles the nerves to throw grass in the air, then why not.

AHA! Vig, so you knew the wind direction in the first place? :D :D

I do it from time to time, elevated tees, that sort of thing.
Works for me.
Then again, I don't play at Augusta like everyone else on here obviously does.....swirling winds??....not at mine!

I pick up some loose grass on the third and see where it goes.

If it blows back hard in my face, I know the 6th will probably play the equivalent of about a 600 yard par 4.

what's wrong with the wet finger?
it's always with you, you don't have to bend down to find it and you're not giving any information to your opponent.

then again for the poetic there are wind shadows on the water,
reeds dancing in the wind,
though birds crashing into trees are a good indicator of strong winds

Dave

In my case I was specifically thinking of the 6th at my course the little par 3. The trees either side act as a buffer for the wind and so I throw some grass to see the direction as it does tend to switch around. I played on Saturday and hit a 4 iron well and was 5 yards short and my opponent (who had been pretty much the same distance club for club) hit his and it waved at the flag as it landed on the 13th green some 30 yards too long.

I know mate! I was just having a laugh......

I also throw grass to gauge wind direction and speed.

As an ex hurler who took free pucks it was a pre shot routine i used when taking frees so judt carried on the routine in golf.

I wont say its pointless.

Really, everyone throws the grass only to get the direction of the wind and not the strength

Therefore it is actually quite useful
