• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Thought for today

Sorry club champ who's we?

Can you remind me of what kit you play with? I seem to remember you played with some decent stuff and iirc prov1 balls. In any case, does this post mean you'll no longer play these and you just buy the cheapest brand?

Take it you'll be trading in ya driver for a k1 and swapping those lovely footjoys for a pair of sports soccer specials?

Does is matter what car you drive? how big your house is? wht you do for a living? where you go out for a drink? what you drink?

Not really in the whole grand scheme of life but you would prefer if you had the choice to.

Have a nice car
Have a big enough house to be comfortable
Enjoy your job and be paid well
Drink in a friendly pub where you are welcome
And drink a drink you like (a conclusion you have come to after trying out others!)

This all applies to golf aswell. We buy what we want to buy because we want it and think it will make our lives easier and more enjoyable!

(you could play with a set of junior howsens from argos if you like!) let us know then if you still enjoy golf!!!

Does it really matter what club's we use? Yes custom fitting will help all golfers

Does it really matter which BALL we use? Yes swing speed and weather will play a big factor

Does it really matter what tee's we use? Yes if you play of the whites you will shoot higher than off the yellow

Does it really matter which kind of course we play? No, hit fairways and GIR you going to make a good score

Does it really matter what shoe's/clothes we wear? No, who cares as long as its comfy and matches the dress code.

Does it really matter what kind of bag we carry our clubs in? No as long as its comfy

Clubchamp - it's called discussion - I know you struggle with that in Northern Ireland but it's what non-third world countries tend to do amongst themselves and each other....

Does it really matter what club's we use? Yes - a £200 TM or whatever driver will be much more consistent for the user than something from Argos....

Does it really matter which BALL we use? Yes - there is still point most people using a ProV1x as they don't hit the ball hard enough and for people who use lake balls or refurbs well.......

Does it really matter what tee's we use? I like wooden white or black ones only (you probably like orange and green ones....) but I can only use one colour in each round, and I'll only use broken ones on par 3's....but sometimes it's easier to score from the whites then the yellows as it takes some of the hazards out of play as you cant reach them...

Does it really matter which kind of course we play? Yes - I prefer links courses because they suit my game - but I know others prefer 'target' golf....

Does it really matter what shoe's/clothes we wear? Yes - plus fours on Tuesdays, and no jeans....EVER....

Does it really matter what kind of bag we carry our clubs in? I don't believe carrying you bag helps your game at all, eletric trolleys all round please.....

Let me see if I can put a different spin on this.

Is there a point at which you'd consider stopping playing ?

If you had to use old knackered clubs, had to use lake balls, bag that was falling to bits etc etc.

An example of this might be that because of financial constraints you could only afford to play say once every two months ?

Or, if you are a really low handicapper and something happened, permanent injury say, which caused your handicap to sky rocket. Would you still play knowing you'll never even be close to as good as you were ?

I guess this goes back to why we all play ? Would we all carry on playing regardless of circumstances ?

If I'm 100% honest, if I could only manage 1 round every couple of months, I might stop.

The attraction for me right now is improving my game. Don't get me wrong I do just enjoy getting out there away from everything else and just hitting that little white ball around. But my 'prime' driver right now is getting better.

But that may change over time as I reach the peak of what I am capable of.

Just a different way of looking at it.

Sammmebee, If I didnt know better Id be taking offence from biggoted posts like that, insinuating that Northern Ireland is a third world country is pretty much shameful and with regards to discussion, where have you been for the last ten years? There was no insults nor personal remarks so why did you feel the need to post this? Its pretty pathetic when its not face to face.

If you hadnt noticed it has caused a bit of discussion and the intentions of the original poster was to get people to discuss how expensive clubs are better than cheap clubs and kit if at all.

Sorry...I have though actually been in Ireland for some of the last then years but not now obviously....

I'll put the wording of OP down to drink then and my post down to being in a bad mood this morning....

To answer OP, there are amateurs, then there are amateurs

down in the weeds (where I am), no there probably isn't much that a £700 set of irons would do for me so I'll save them for later, (but I seem to recall you buying a couple of sets, AP2's weren't they?)

yes the ball matters, some I plain don't like and between 'equivalent' balls of different manufacture even I can tell the difference, sometimes.

tees - don't know what you're on about, unless it's wooden v plastic in it's various guises.

courses - yes, play as many different courses as you can.

clothes, so long as they're comfortable, not obviously oxfam rejects, a total faux-pas or better worn in a circus tent, probably not. Shoes obviously should be comfortable and dry and so long as they're Footjoy, no it doesn't matter.

bag, so long as it fits the trolley - no
