Thomas Bjorn next Ryder Cup Captain

From the man himself:

Wow. Truly honoured to be 2018 @RyderCupEurope captain. I cant wait for the next 20+ months. Today is the greatness day of my career - so far ;)

Less than inspiring choice to be honest - there are plenty that have server their time on the tour and have not been selected for captain (Lyle, Jimenez, Lawrie, Levet, etc) so picking based on time served isn't a given.

From what i've seen of him I'm not sure he could inspire a team due to his somewhat low-key approach. Perhaps he can pick a few vice captains who can inspire the troops (think Lancaster vs Jones in Rugby).

I gather he will only get 2 wildcards this time.

McGinley was very low key and managed to inspire the players very well. Monty wasn't exactly in the face as well same with Langer - but they were all very methodical in their approach to ensure every single thing was done

Bjorn has been around a number of RC as vice captain and will have seen how the others work and can pick bits of each of them.

And as has been mentioned - he was a players representative so I'm sure he has their respect

I think it's a solid if somewhat predictable choice. However given his role as players representative on tour he'll have the full respect of the tour members and I think he's not one to suffer fools. He'll be every bit as methodical as his predecessors (perhaps Faldo aside) and I'm sure he'll do an excellent job

I did this for posting last year prior to RC2016 (so the ‘Currently’ ages may be out slighty)
All the Westwood talk of getting 2020 seems to forget Harrington’s older and
imo better suited to a USA go nevermind the 3 majors…

Anyway, I have done a little research and in my opinion…

Here is the Upcoming Ryder Cups with probable Captains and ages.

Currently Will be…
2016 – Clarke (USA) 47 48
2018 – Jimenez 52 54
Or Bjorn 45 47
2020 – Harrington (USA) 44 48
2022 – Westwood 42 48
2024 – Poulter (USA) 40 48
2026 – Stenson 39 49
2028 – Garcia (USA) 36 48
2030 – McDowell 36 50
2032 – Rose (USA) 35 51

Job done!

I bear in mind here major winners, European stalwarts and number of Ryder Cups played in.

I acknowledge that I missed out Donald – he’s 38 and would be around the Stenson/McDowell era.
Argue away on that one but in my list it would make 3 English Captains in a row.

There is some symmetry to this list - all getting it, (Jimenez apart), around the end of main tour careers just before seniors’ tour age.
This preference was set by Monty 47, Olly 46 and McGinley 47.

The Captains in America also make a lot of sense – Harrington, Poulter, Garcia and Rose.
