Thinking of getting our first dog? Cockapoo, anyone done this already ?

Just remember that these 2 are the 2 most famous rescue centres in the country and as such have the biggest pull, and therefore clearly the biggest waiting lists. You're after one of the most popular and most fashionable breeds, at a point where dogs are mad popular, and you've gone for the 2 rescue centres that everyone has heard of.

I can't recommend expanding your search enough. Where are you? I'm sure there's someone who can recommend a centre close who isn't one of the bigger names.

Advice appreciated , beginners search on picking those two.... Am 40 miles N of London so will look at more local / smaller rescue centres as well ?

Now about £3k for a cockapoo.
Insurance will be costly as they are now targeted by thieves
Kennels during holidays etc.
Not cheap owning a dog nowadays.
On the bright side my daughter has a Snoodle and she is lovely...no hairs to cast is a big plus.

Every Cockapoo Club of GB Breeder has closed their waiting list, some indefinitely as they have had so much interest, and on Pets for Home classified s they're £ 2,500 - £ 3,500 with much of the time seemingly little to no background.

Am sure most are legit..... But being a very big and long term commitment, financially and emotionally want to get it right first time.

I still get email alerts when litters are advertised and you can’t get a cockapoo for less than 2500 now

Sadly, there are two many puppy farms around now, and prices like these make people all the more willing to set them up. I don't have a dog at the moment but if I did then I would probably go for a rescue and give a dog the home it needs.
If I was buying a pedigree or "crossbreed" (we used to call them mongrels ;)) then I would want to see the parents at the place where they lived. I've seen too many horror stories of seriously ill puppies from puppy farms.

Rescue and rescue and then rescue again. The more people are prepared to pay £1000+ for a puppy the more puppy farms and those in it for the money will prosper and the animals suffer.

Dogs are becoming a fashion statement, the dog to be seen with this week is .............
I agree with Amanda, rescue every time and they aren't just for Christmas.....unlike turkeys ;)

I was walking our dog on Sunday morning and passed a type I had never seen before. Passing the time I asked what breed it was. A Sheba Anu was the answer, a Japanese breed. 'They are very popular in the South of England' came the very posh and pompous reply. I'm not sure I manged to avoid rolling my eyes very well :D. This years fashion................

Bred for hunting, can get aggressive - perfect as a family pet

We have one who is coming up to 2yrs old. She is brilliant, Bought for many of the reasons others do:

No malting
Great temperament
My son and I are both asthmatic

I have not found one single dog hair in the house, no coughs, sneezes, or runny noses from me or the boy.

I can recommend a breeder near Ashford in Kent, she is where we got ours from. We are currently considering getting another one too. Every other dog round my way is some form of 'Poo' cross, springer, jacka, cava although have you google Golden Doodles?? If so DONT!! You will want one!!!

In terms of our house, 4 kids, She growls at them every now and again when they annoy her too much (and my kids push her boundaries sometimes!!) but never seen a sign of aggression. I work from home most of the time, so she is rarely alone, wife works locally part time, so worst case she is home alone for 4 hours, for which she sleeps!! She is brilliant, no problem training even for an idiot like me, she is VERY playful and needs a lot of exercise, but that's half the fun!! She has never chewed up anything she shouldn't have (1 exception, 1 pair of raybans i left on the sofa! when she was a little one!) but nothing for ages, needs a professional groom every 8-10 weeks, that's 40quid ish a pop, general grooming is easy, although can get knotty/matty ears when it gest close to groom time!

Happy to answer any more Q's

Beagles are a lovely dog but once normality resumes I wouldn’t want the little fella stuck in the house on his own for long periods.

We got our first ever and current dog from Craigs List, inquired in the morning, he was ours in the afternoon. We first went to the local rescue centre and they came round to check our house out for suitability. I live in the middle of fields and have a garden and paddock with lots of room, the nearest road is about 300 metres away and that gets 2 or 3 cars an hour at best, there is another house next to us but the next closest house after that is about half a mile away. I have always mostly worked from home so can take the dog walking a lot and be around for it, I have access to lovely countryside walks through fields and trees from the end of my drive, basically any dog we got would mostly be living its best life. But they rejected us as our garden was not enclosed:mad: We did point out that all the dog would do if it decided to leave our property would be to go into a field, but they were not having it. Hence us going to Craigs list.

He's a mongrel cross of a Manchester terrier and a Jack Russel, bit daft but with all dogs you end up loving them. Neighbours have 2 cockapoos who are nice, but one is not the sharpest knife in the draw. And they do seem a bit of hard work when it comes to keeping them clean. Ours is great as he is short haired and rarely malts. So when you go away in the UK to a house and you get all the instructions saying no dogs in the bedroom, no dogs upstairs, no dogs on the sofa etc etc we can mostly ignore them as he leaves very little, if any trace.

In the business I work in, we deal with people who use artificial insemination of dogs for breeding and we have a concern about the ethics of some of the people involved in the business as we are seeing a significant increase in the number of these Dog AI clinics opening up in peoples houses. We've taken a business decision NOT to supply anyone who is not associated with a vet to try and ensure that we are supplying to the right people.

And this about Canine Artificial Insemination: https://www.vetsurgeon.org/news/b/v...e-surgical-artificial-insemination-prohibited
It makes interesting reading for people looking at buying high value dogs. As I have said previously, be very careful as some of these people really don't care about the dogs and are just concerned about the money.

We got a cockapoo about 4 year's ago. I've never been a dog lover but got out voted 3-1 on getting a dog. So glad we did. She's absolutely amazing but like people have said not great on the lead when more than 1 person is walking with her. Pulls like mad but that I think is due to lack of proper training, possibly the wrong harness/lead and she's just so keen to walk/excited.

Amazing lovable personality. Always has to have some part of her touching you when you're chilling - it's almost like a comfort thing for her. Giddy, excitable but fantastic and funny with it. Kids love her too. Doesn't malt but needs brushing and cutting regularly or will get matted under legs and ears.

Can't recommend the breed enough. I know there are thousands out there now but she is such an amazing dog.
