Thinking of daily disposable contact lenses. Pros and cons????

My eyesight has gradually been getting worse over the years, I now have to wear varifocals for normal daily use.
Up until very recently I have been able to play golf without wearing them...it always felt weird with them on and I could manage to get round OK without them. Trouble is nowadays I'm even finding it difficult to distinguish the makers name on the ball!!
So the last few times out I have worn my glasses...but I still find it feels really weird, especially putting.. when the frame of the glasses interferes with my usual clear line of sight to the cup.
I am seriously thinking of trying contact lenses but purely for playing golf in. Does anybody else wear them on the course, and if so do you have any problems with them?
Out of all the things I hate about my game at the moment I find that wearing glasses is my biggest bugbear, and I'm desperate to find an alternative..other than surgery.
I'm thinking more of the disposable "pair a day" type ones, where a box of 32 would last me six months as I am quite happy to wear my glasses for driving, reading, work etc.
Any advice??
Thanks
Rob

Re: Thinking of contact lenses. Pros and cons????

I've worn lenses for years, - put them in at 8.30am and take them out when I go to bed, love them.

Very occasionally, - today funnily enough, I may get some irritation, and have to leave them out.
This time it was because the friends house we were at last night was very warm, and my eyes dried a little, and I must have rubbed one so it is a bit sore this morning, so I'll leave them out today.

But, 360 days out of 365, they are no problem at all.
I might be very lucky, and I certainly dont have any trouble putting them in etc, or taking out, but I do love wearing them, - 20/20 all day very day.

I've considered Laser surgery, but as yet havent been convinced of its long term effects, so for now, I'm happy with lenses.

Also put dailys in and wear them solely for golf (or watching football in pub),I can honestly say I have had no bother whatsoever oncourse and only a wee slight irritation to my eyes afterwards but not very often, been using for just over a year now and got them because of the exact same reason as you....I found the sight of the specs legs a nightmare with the shortgame and putting in particular,oh and there was also the small matter of rain...a total nightmare!.I play alot and got a box of 120 about 11 months ago and am nearing the end but do double them up sometimes (being a tight scotsman)by taking them out after my round on a Sat and putting em back into the solution for Sundays useage and sometimes 3 days in a row and it works well so long as you keep the carton lid over the top of the solution as it evaporates otherwise leaving you a dry useless lens.
End of the day why not try some out?My optician gave me a free box of 4 to try before I bought so do that and i'm sure you will buy them.

Also use daily disposables for golf without problem. The ones I use are comfortable for a whole day's wear and rarely cause irritation. The latest designs are far better at staying moist in the eye so do not cause the irritation problems with extended wear that some of the older designs did.

Thanks for your advice gents.
I'm going to arrange an eye test sometime this week as it's been a couple of years since I had a test.
Will certainly try them out as I am getting hacked right off wearing my bins.
Thanks once again

How much do they cost?

I've been looking around at prices and they are not that expensive. Can get a box of 32 for £4.99 (unless there are any hidden extras). If I were just to wear them when I am playing golf a box of 32 would last me a good 4 months or so... Just got to go and get an examination done so I can get the right prescription.
Vision express have just opened up in town and are doing half price exams so will most probably book one up for later in the month.

I pay £10/mth for Monthly disposables, plus solutions etc, and they are delivered to me 3monthly, @ Specsavers.

But on the basis that I would only be wearing these to play golf Chris, (maybe 4 times a month), it would be cheaper for me to buy a box of 32 and just use them as I want them yeah?

I do the same as ChrisMc - I suspect the optician will tell you you need to wear the a bit more regular so your eyes get used to them......I went for an eye test before last season started - I was amazed I could actually see where the ball went after that!!!

I think you'd need to wear them a bit more regularly than 'just popping them in for a game ', to really feel the benefits.

Try them, you might well like 20/20 all the time, and not wondering "where the hell it was you put those g;asses down ?"

lol I know I do.

Re: Thinking of contact lenses. Pros and cons????

I started wearing contact lenses for both snooker and golf some time ago. The trouble I now find is that I can't see to put the contact lenses in without my specs on!
I have reverted to wearing glasses for golf and even bought a cheap pair of distance only specs but discovered I can't read a scorecard or strokesaver with them. Finally I have gone back to my varifocals and am managing fine. The only problem I had was in putting, if I didn't look out of the middle of the lens I was missing puts right and left due to the distortion.
Rain can be a problem too!

As to cost, bear in mind that you will need to buy 2 boxes unless your eyes have identical prescriptions.

I buy 100 pairs from Tesco opticians for about £30.00. These can last me up to a year

I too wear varifocals and can have problems with the focus shifts; no problems with frames though as they are frameless.

I tried contacts but can't even put them in; my blink reflex is too strong and flips the contact off my finger! (note Specsavers have been doing a free trial, don't know if they still are).

I have had two pairs of golf glasses. The first were framed, primarily distance but with a small reading area at the bottom inner corner (about the size of the 'brand' label on an apple). These didn't work too well due to the position of the reading zone, I was tucking my chin onto my chest.

My current pair are distance lenses, half framed and tinted blue. These seem to work well enough and the blue tint makes a white ball stand out more clearly. (Does make the 'greens' some interesting shades though.)

Rain is, of course, always going to be a problem but not insurmountable with sufficient tissues.

Cost depends on prescription. £4.99 for a box of 32! 100 pairs for £30! - you're lucky b@stards. Mine - £160 for 6 months .....

But still worth it not to have to wear rained-up bins

Re: Thinking of contact lenses. Pros and cons????

Well, at one time dailies used to work out a lot more expensive than monthy disposable, but after reading some of the posts, I can see that is no longer the case.

I used to get monthy disposables delivered via specsavers, though found I stopped wearing them as often as I otherwise would. Therefore I stopped subscribing to them as I have a backlog of lenses now.

Now I don't know whether this is still the case but certain types of prescriptions like those for stigmatisms etc were not avilable as a daily but were as a monthly.

The ones I used to get delivered although usually taken in & out each day & cleaned for a month before being disposed of, though the beauty of the ones I have is that I can every so often at a push wear them for more than a day & up to a week at a time where there is no way of dong the usual cleaning regime as they can be slept in. Standard dailies can't or certainly couldn't.

Oh & I really must start wearing mine again more often, as it seems an awful waste to chuck a pair away after five wears just because I've had them in & out of solution for a month.

No longer the case - you can get dailies with prescription for astigmatism. That's what mine are. But they're pricey ...
