Right peeps

My carer and I have booked a weekend in Prague at the end of September.

Who’s been there? What is there to do apart from drinking beer and Wenceslas Square ? ??

No specifics but it is a great place to wander. The bridge is a big deal, classic photo op ?. Just go up and down, in and out of random streets. It's one of those places.

I really like Prague, Lady T doesn't. If you don't drink beer and don't like pork then you are in trouble ?

Have a meal in the Fat Cat and sample the beers. ?

River trip and visit the castle. Make sure you see the clock in the centre strike the hour. Can’t remember it’s name but the crowds will tell you are in the right place ! We did the Urban tour which was very good. Assume they are still doing them. It is not that big a capital so you can easily walk most of it.

go to the Ossuary (Bone Church) at Kutna Hora if you can. It contains the bones of about 40,000 people who died of the plague. They bones are arranged into creative decorations that include bells, the Schwarzenberg coat-of-arms, and a chandelier. It is about 40km east of Prague mind so might take a bit out of your weekend.

If you want to eat somewhere in the evening try the Blue Duck (U Modré Kachničky) at Nebovidská 6. I first ate there in 1997 and have been directing folk there ever since.....even 25 years on I've never had someone come back to me and say it was anything but excellent. (The restaurant specialises in Duck dishes by the way).

If you go to the zoo, beware that the bat exhibit has bats flyng around freely inside it. I have a real phobia about these things and was not aware, hence subsequent very embarassing panic attack followed by many glasses of dark beer to get the memory of it out of my head.

Be aware that an acceptable side dish to a plate of roasted meat is more meat.

My best man wants my stag do to be in Prague, I get the impression the itinerary would not be the same so have little advice to give other than wrap up….. so I assume it’s cold.

Phil, maybe we can swap pics at the end?

It's a lovely city to just walk about and explore. September should be decent weather still too, no specifics from me.

I thought the Astronomical Clock was comically underwhelming. There was a massive crowd waiting to see it, and a lot were saying "is that it?" when it reached the hour. I appreciate it is extremely old, but all the same, I thought it was rubbish!

Prague Castle was very good, although we did later find out that the Changing of the Guard ceremony was not "traditional" like the UK one, but was dreamed up to attract tourists after the fall of communism.

.

It’s a clock, what were you expecting ? It dates back to 1400 so as a piece of history it is pretty impressive.

I’ll save you 20 minutes. When we went it was winter and directly opposite the clock was a beer tent. We watched from there. Hardly any crowd until 10 minutes before the hour as that is when all the complications and movements happen.

Phil me and the missus had one of our best nights ever in Prague when we went there for a week, watching the reds years ago.

I think it was about £100 each then, so looks a bit more now, and have included a link (although can't remember if we went with this company or not, so check around).

1. Chauffeur picks you up from your hotel and takes you to a restaurant that is either michelin starred or in a great place. Our 3 course meal really was one of the best we'd ever had, I didnt think food could taste that good. We went with the one overlooking the Charles bridge.
2. The chauffeur then takes you to the opera, and we had a box to ourselves.
3. Afterwards the car takes you back to the hotel or into the town centre.

The current price looks around £120-135, but that includes a meal, taxi all night and the opera - go'ed she's worth it!!

Prague Opera & Dinner Package - Prague Experience

Just dont do what we did and wear a tuxedo and a cocktail dress - we were so over dressed people were looking at us at the intermission.
