If I may jump in, having served 36 years and then being Queens Body Guard.

Who cares? So long as they remember and are respectful I don’t think it matters, making a fuss deflects from the Poppy itself, we’ve had/got White Poppy’s Purple Poppy’s and now Rainbow Poppy’s.

If they are showing respect, crack on.

But many veterans are not happy, they say it is making a political statement instead of just remembering all those that fought.

To be honest , I had not read a thing about it until I saw it on Facebook. A guy was going mad about it saying don’t hijack the poppy. I knew him at work and he was a lazy sod.
My view is we know what a red poppy means in the UK. It represents everyone. But if folk want to put a rainbow on it because it highlights there community. It’s fine by me. It was A community who was wrongly viewed as illegal and immoral. People Like Alan Turing and simple soldiers. They paid the ultimate sacrifice. It is the same as a purple poppy for animals.

Am not sure it is political. For me it is highlighting a community if that’s the word.
One poppy that may be construed as political is the white poppy. Even though its symbol is peace. The symbol
May be peace but where does the money go?

And that’s their right mate, we all are entitled to an opinion, but let’s not forget it was introduced in 2016, so why 8 years to be outraged.

The RBL sell one on their website.🤷‍♂️

Wait until some find out we have a Black Poppy to remember all the Commonwealth Personnel who died in Service.

I think the problem is now Ian is that as a community they were “ oppressed” and I have no problem with that being highlighted. As Paul says as long as it don’t deflect from the poppy itself I am fine with that. What I will say is that over the last five years, communities have really been getting behind the poppy appeal and remembrance itself. Some of the decorations have been fantastic and I don’t mean in a commercial Halloween type of way. Warsop in Notts is quite simply stunning in many respects.
 
I have no objection per se in there being variations of the poppy (so long as they are sold by and benefit the RBL).

I guess my issue is that the Poppy is an all encompassing symbol of remembrance for everyone to wear no matter race, colour, creed or sexual orientation, it is for everyone. By creating variants of that, my feeling is that you are dividing that wonderful, all inclusive message but saying that your poppy is not for me and does not represent me and I need my own one to represent who I am. That just seems to move from the beautiful simplicity that the red poppy is for everyone.

I do not object to other variants, certainly would not complain about them but I do have a slight concern about the message of inclusivity in remembrance that is sends.
 
It’s not the rainbow poppy that is this years controversy it’s the Pride poppy that the RBL pulled from sale (then reintroduced it) that also supports Trans rights. This is what is upsetting people, even the gay rights group LGB Alliance is against it, calling it “a proponent of gender identity ideology”

Again though, It only deflects from the meaning of the Poppy if you let it bother you.

I get more wound up by the Poppy wearers who don’t give a moments thought to those who gave their lives the other 50 weeks of the year, but that’s for personal reasons to me.

I’m sure there are those who wear a poppy as some sort of virtue signaling and don’t have a clue what it means or anything.

This is probably as good a post that hits the nail on the head.

I see a lot of football fans that have the poppy and there clubs badge at the side of it. As GB says. The poppy is all encompassing so it don’t need a badge at the side of it. Unfortunately the poppy helps to promote other “ groups” be it football rugby, or sexuality. That’s how the modern times of the poppy has evolved. Rightly or wrongly. Groups or teams gaining popularity on the back of the poppy I can understand. What I cannot accept is people making money on the back of the poppy for there own gain.
 
Flight from Birmingham to Antalya yesterday.
There was a guy, clearly drunk, causing the cabin staff (and passengers) a fair bit of bother.

When we landed, everyone was told to remain seated after the seat belt signs went off. Couple of minutes later two policemen boarded the plane and escorted him away, to much cheering. I guess he'll be spending his holiday in a Turkish jail instead of a nice hotel 😆

Just thankful they didn't turn the plane back to Birmingham. I guess if they had, the guy in question might have faced even worse summary justice from the passengers!

Not thought much about various styles or designs of poppy…so clearly it doesn’t bother me. But for the purposes of this discussion I will..and my thinking is that the poppy is about celebrating and remembering the sacrifice made by so many - it’s not about me in any way.

So if I were to wear a rainbow poppy I hope I’d be celebrating and remembering the sacrifice in war and conflict made by those of the rainbow community as well as all who made the sacrifice - and not that I’d be thinking - look at me - as a member of the rainbow community I’m celebrating the sacrifice of all those who have made the sacrifice, rainbow community and all. Maybe that’s a bit too subtle and I know I could never tell that of another.

Bottom line is that I don’t really care what poppy people wear, and I don’t care if they don’t wear one at all…I try to not judge people as I see them as I cannot see into their hearts.

I think it’s the Ryanair chief exec who has called for limited drinks for passengers before and during flights. I totally get that. But once more the minority spoil it. ☹️
 
Kids went out with my mum yesterday, eldest got dropped back to us so we could take her to a party which was great fun. As the twins were at nanny's we could go together which eldest hasn't had for a party in years.

We then dropped her back for a sleep over with her sisters (their first one all together at my mum's)

Wife and I have managed a very lazy Saturday morning. Up at 9. Cooked us breakfast for half 9. Haven't got to get them until 11:30 so plan to sit and do nothing until then lol 😆

A glimpse to life pre kids .. very quiet

He didn't seem too bad when the flight started. At one point I overheard a stewardess tell him that the captain had instructed them to stop serving him alcohol, so I guess he got drunk on the plane itself. Someone told me they saw him open a tin and pop about 5 pills, so presumably drugs were also involved. He basically got worse as the flight progressed.
